I would like to seek some advice and opinions on how best to orientate my throttle body on the intake manifold. I think I have three possible options, and I see some merit in each configuration, however I'm not confident of which is the best layout. The car this setup will be installed in has TF904 'box. I have purchased a Lokar kickdown cable kit and it's fair to say I am a bit perplexed by it all. She's right hand drive as well.

Option 1: Throttle Body aligned parallel to engine.
Pros - closest to existing setup, kickdown easiest to setup
Cons - Accelerator cable run would be very long, cable bracket mount points not really ideal, would probably have to weld something to the manifold.

Option 2: Throttle body at right angles to engine, linkages to the front
Pros - Permits use of cast bosses to mount cable bracket, nice path for accelerator cable
Cons - Kickdown needs to turn 90deg, throttle cable needs to "push" the blades open on the TB so will require making an arm and attaching it below the pivot point
Image

Option 3: Throttle body at right angles to engine, linkages to rear
Pros - Accelerator cable path OK, cable pulls in the right direction to open blades
Cons - Kickdown cable needs to turn 90deg, no real cable mount bosses cast into manifold at this location so will probably have to weld something to it.

I'd really appreciate your advice and opinions here. Are 90deg bends OK on Lokar kits? Would I need to run the inner cable through some brake line or something bent to the right angle to ensure the cable doesn't bind against the outer sheath? Anyone had experience with setting up one of these with a TF? What would you recommend? I'm not entirely convinced I have considered everything that I need to consider, if you know what I mean. Anything I've forgotten?

Many thanks in advance,
Eyman

In all seriousness, #3 looks best to me. :D

I've haven't got enough $$$ to fund my existing vices, let alone add another to the list!

So are there no "gotchas" in making the KD bend 90deg from the direction of accelerator pull?

I have option #3 on the carbed Hpak and it runs best that way (but the throttle linkage is to the front side of the engine)...

I will be running my EFI 'pak the same way since the primary bores will be most used in traffic allowing for a better spread of air from the opening point...

See if you can find an acc. cable off of a late model chrysler car (in the US chrysler LHS/Sebring, etc... is just about right and you can 'make' the bracket work with your setup...

No, not if you use a kickdown cable like a Lokar setup.... (worst case scenario is you decide to dump the autotranny for a manual box...LOL)

good luck,

Thanks for the reply Duster. Could I ask you to please post a couple of photos of how your cable and brackets mount up?

This 'thread' shows the initial bracket I made and have 'whittled down' over the years... I haven't had time to go fabricate a 'nice' one (to busy working and helping everybody else... the EFI setup will get a 'show' bracket out of #4 stainless, since I am a Sheetmetal Worker...)

This will give you some ideas on where to go, since your throttle lever is on the 'other' side, you might be able to make something that uses the pad on the #6 runner that was originally intended for the old ball/crank kickdown linkage...

good luck,

I mocked up a bracket template from cardboard. I **think** the Lokar cable mount is too far rearward. By rearward I guess I mean too close to the cylinder head, and directly over number 6 runner.

I'm thinking of bringing the KD cable mount a coulple of inches closer to the TB (further away from the cylinder head) so that the cable itself can route around the manifold easier. Another thought was to extend the lokar bracket further away from the #6 runner, but the problem with that is that the cable will no longer be pulling directly perpindicular with the throttle axis. What do you think? I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Yeah, that's the fun of going where most people fear to tread...

I had to mock the setup on a dummy block and head, then work out the mounting, and details, and how everything was going to 'work out'...

Keep Going!

I'll mount it up on the engine stand this weekend. Unfortunately my stand is not drilled for a 30deg slant!

I mounted my Weber like the 3rd one. I have a lokar cable setup and it is at a 90 degree angle...Seems to work fine. Still trying to work out the exact adjustment. It's kicking down now. Just seems to be shifting a little hard right now and a little late.

Thanks for the reply. I got the manifolds fitted up in preparation for the install this weekend. There was a lot of clearancing required in order to get them to fit. A lot!
