Read the second post as far as the counter rotating engines are concerned

Which part is in question? The part about the existence of counterrotating engines? Or the part about distributor rotation?

If the engine is a "counter rotating" engine, the cam would also run backwards, and therefore the distributer. If the distributer turns backwards, the advance will not work properly. I am thinking the dist drive gear on the cam and the gear on the dist would be changed to keep the distributer rotation correct. Otherwise a "marine" distributer would be required.
I am just guesing, here. I don't know for sure.

My 1984 Chrysler Marine 318 engine parts catalogue shows clockwise and anticlockwise starter motors, clockwise and anticlockwise camshafts...

...but one and only one distributor.

The part about distributor rotation -I hav tried anfdit is pissble to revers the dizzy everything just flips over - but the statement that the dizzy keeps rotating the same direction, just the wiring differs..

Simply put,

The advance goes ahead of the engine's rotation. If this one crank rotates this way, the distributor have to follow that, and on reverse rotation engine the different distributor also follows this in opposite. So you need a reverse rotation distributor as well as camshaft to set up a proper reverse rotation engine. Easier to do that with EFI rather than search for reverse rotation distributor.

Wouldn't you also need a reverse rotation oil pump?

I think you could use the standard distributor if you had reverse cut gears; i.e. gear on cam and distributor gear were cut in opposite direction. (think this would apply to oil pump to).

Wizard: Chrysler seem to disagree with you.

why couldnt you just grind the drive gear on the cam so it turns the diz and pump the same way?

ive seen counter rotating 4.3 GMs and other than the cam (which also has to produce a different torque curve to match the propeller's needs) and a few other internal parts theyre not all that special.

marineengine.com has some very knowledgeable people on it, i just wish theyd update their frigging forum style to something more current. its a nightmare to navigate through old posts.

The way I read the manuals, that seems to be exactly what Chrysler did.

In addition to different crank, cam & dist. gear, the crank seals are different on the counter-rotating mill.

Put regular seals in a counter-clockwise engine and you'll have a drippy mess. Look closely at a crank seal and you'll understand why.

Don't ask me how I know this to be true...
