Started to assemble the engine tonight and then ran into a few problems/questions:
1. The first being that the main bearing the machien shop ordered for me aren't right. The 3rd bearing (the one with the flange) is too narrow will not fit over the surface on the block or on the 3rd cap. Also, the rest of the mains are not as wide as the ones that came out of the motor, however, they are the correct diameter and snap into place, just are not as wide. The cam bearings (already installed in the block) are also skinnier than the ones that came out. Did Clevite happen to come out with some new bearing technology that allowed for skinnier bearings? Does it sound like all the bearings are wrong, or just the mains?
2. When installing the cam, how far do I put it in? Does it rest up against something (nothing that I can see?), or I do I just get it centered up with the cam bearings and timing chain?
3. Does anyone out there have an assembly guide for the slant six (official or unofficial)? I'd like to know the official order in putting the motor together. Also, I'd like to know what things to look out for. Doesn't even have to be specific to the slant six, one for a straight six would work I assume.
4. How tight (hard to turn) should the cam, crank, and whole motor be to turn once it is all put together. I can turn the cam with the cam sprocket on, but not terribly easy. Any refernce as to how easy/hard they should be?
5. Do I need to put RTV sealer on the manifold studs where they meet with head? They go into the water jacket, correct? Also, how tight do the studs need to be in the head?

Thanks again for all the help so far...

You have a set of mains for the cast crank motor and a forged crank block. Cast crank bearings are much narrower than the forged ones.

It sounds like the cam bearings are for the 1981 up, hydraulic lifter motor.
Rod bearings might be incorrect, also.
Better check the gasket set also, for the correct year.

Yep, they gave you cast-crank mains for a mid-'76 or later engine. They will not work in your engine.

Also, you need a factory service manual before you proceed further with the engine assembly.

RTV won't seal those head studs either. Use Loctite. Ask me how I know.

Ok, thanks for the heads up. Do you guys happen to have part numbers for good bearings (either Clevite or Federal Mogul)? I'll be needing cam, rod, and main bearings at .010" over. I'd like to have a part number so I can either find them myself (can these be gotten via local parts stores?) or so I can tell the machine shop what the correct numbers are. Up to what year are the bearings interchangeable for the forged crank 225? Just FYI, my motor is a '64.

I have a factory service manual for my truck, but it doesn't have a motor assembly guide for putting a motor together after you have the block bored and get new guts. There's one of the "Auto Mechanics Fundamentals" on Ebay right now I think I'll get.

Clevite Rod Bearing #CB 606G @ whatever undersize you need
Clevite Main Bearing #MS 517P @ whatever undersize you need
Durabond Cam Bearing #PD-18

I just got all the bearings for my build this last week.

Thanks for the numbers. Where did you get them through? Local parts store, machine shop?

I work at a machine shop. I went to the Clevite book and looked 'em up. When I ordered them through our local engine parts warehouse, they confirmed the numbers. Personally, I wouldn't go to a regular parts store (ie. Schucks, Napa...), hit up one of your local engine rebuilders that has an in house parts department. They should also be able to get the right parts you need. Plus, they'll be able to save a little cash over the retail stores.
