Every summer when it gets hot, the grease or whatever stuff is in the pivot point on my rearview mirror gets thin and the mirror won't stay in place. It just kinda dangles around and won't stick. Is there any way to fix this? This is on my 71 Duster. Thanks.

There is no grease there. Take the 2 long screws out, and the assembly pulls off the car. If you look on the underside of it, theres a small plate with 3 small screws holding it to the base. In the middle of this plate is the ball that is part of the rod going to the mirror. The more you tighten the 3 small screws, the more pressure it puts on the ball and makes it harder to move.

Tightening that plate might not do it either. Might need a shim. Even the paperboard from a cereal box can be made to work. BTDT

Thanks guys. I thought there was grease in there because there is this stain and grease like substance coming right out of the joint. Not sure where it came from. Anyway I took it off and put a cereal box square in there as a shim. Worked like a charm. Thanks!

Yeah...back when our cars were newer, Kellogg or General Mills or someone tried an advertising campaign promising a free rearview mirror balljoint shim in specially-marked boxes of Crunchy-Os, but for some reason it didn't have much of a positive effect on sales, so they dropped it.

That's why you have to come here to learn that trick.
