ok while i am adjusting the valves i am going to put a new gasket on it. I am going to use cork ( or is rubber better?) do i have to use sealant on it? if i do, what kind? thank you.

I always use rubber (FelPro) and NO gasket sealer. If the valve cover is in decent shape, it won't leak, and you can usually even reuse the gasket. Lou

Larry, I recently put a new valve cover gasket on my 68 Valiant's 6 and used a cork gasket with Indian Head shellac compound. This compound works super for sealing but tends to stick the gasket to the head and valve cover when trying to remove the valve cover, thus rendering the gasket useless beyond one use. I would recommend using some Indian Head Shellac and a new cork gasket for each valve adjustment and not worry too much about trying to reuse the previous gasket. I like the gasket to stay with the cover when I take it off to do regular valve ajustments stick it to the valve cover when every thing is new and clean. Be sure you use a ballpeen hammer to flair the the holes away from the head this will correct the damage done by previous over tightening. as for cork save those trees for the wine people I here they are running short. Hey all,it sounds like the rubber Fel-pro gasket is the way to go on these old Mopars. I'm used to working on old BMW's where you need cork and sealant to seal up all of the Germans "engineering"! Whatever you do, DON'T use RTV silicone solely as a gasket substitute (I've tried)! It will stick the valve cover to the head like super glue to your fingers! Chris chrisstelling@yahoo.com
