Slant Six Forum :: Where do I buy a NEW quality radiator

Been awhile...and yes, I'm still looking. I took my old radiator to have it priced out to be recored, and I heard nothing back from my shop for a while. When I called them back, they had already done the work...without me giving the OK or knowing how much it was going to cost. On top of that, they painted the top tank that I hand cleaned up and was going to keep polished, AND the bottom tank doesn't have the AT cooler now (my car is an auto). To be completely fair, I cannot remember if it had it to begin with, or if the radiator was a replacement and it had an aftermarket external cooler. It's been too long since I've been restoring the car (that's one thing I failed to take a picture of), and me and the guy I was working on the car with originally can't remember.

All that said, I can't get my parts back without paying for their work...which isn't that great...or going through some legal crap. So, I've written off my radiator, and I'm back to looking for another radiator. I have run across the Spectra Premium CU354.

Thoughts? Is that a better fit for my 64?

Does anybody make 22 inch radiators for a 73 Dart Sport slant six, automatic transmission, and original factory air. My original radiator has too many holes and the radiator shop wants $400 to recore it. His supplier has discontinued making new radiators for my Dart. Year One and several others that I checked with gave me the same story. Where is everybody getting their radiators?

You can try 1-800-radiators. Most are made off shore, though. I called my local supplier, and they can special order it. $175, part number 0527

You can find one of these for between $180 and $280. Or if you want an ultrapremium, handmade-in-America all-aluminum radiator, see here, but you're looking at $400+.

I have that proliance radiator and it is not bad for the price I paid. I don't worry about it failing. It fits, has pretty decent fin count and seems to be soldered well. The only issues are the overflow tube points to the drivers side and the spigots seem a little short, use narrow hose clamps. I got it two years ago and it was made in mexico. I was up in northern Washington and needed a radiator right away, the two local shops waisted the week and a half that I had and never did the re-core on my radiator. That was like nothing I had ever dealt with from a radiator shop, times two. I don't know what they actually do for a living. I think the company I got the new radiator from was called radiator express, right out of the phone book, but it may be the same as the 1 800 company Dan mentioned. I had the radiator via Fedex the next morning for something like $12.00 extra. We drove the car over 1400 miles on the way home loaded down in well over 100 degree heat with no problems.

I saw somewhere that proliance is the "new" Modine; I guess Modine got bought out; surprise, as who isn't getting bought out lately? Modine used to be the best you could get in replacement radiators. Check Ebay, as I see new in the box Modine (pre buyout) radiators pop up now and then.

Just went to Advance Auto at lunch. They called and looked for Spectra Premium #CU-527 - no longer available. The Proliance #433527 was in their computer, however none available from vendor. They could get me the 18 inch radiator for non-a/c cars. My Dart is actually a 1974. So we looked for part #433497 (Proliance) for 1974 Darts, and they are available. My 74 has a 225 engine from a 73 Dart and also the radiator from the 73. One difference in the two radiators (73 versus 74) was the tank inlet and tank outlet measurements - 73 Tank Inlet 2 3/4 x 21 5/8 vs 74 Tank Inlet 2 7/8 x 18 1/4. 73 Tank Outlet 2 x 21 5/8 vs 74 Tank Outlet 1 3/4 x 18 1/2 Is this something I should be concerned about? What is Tank inlet/outlet? Other differences - 73 Transmission Oil Cooler 6 inches vs 74 Transmission Oil Cooler 12 inches. 73 has one sensor fitting on top tank vs 74 with two sensor fittings w/ plugs on tank top. Is this for the CCEGR? I'm thinking buy the 74 radiator. Your thoughts please.

Use the #497 ('74-'76) radiator and don't worry about it. There's no reason it couldn't easily be made to fit in a '67-'73 A-body, too. And yes, the top-tank sensor ports are for CCEGR ported-vacuum switches and other such devices. Here are the correct specs for the -'73 vs. '74+ heavy-duty radiators: #497 ('74-'76 A-body HD w/slant-6 engine) Core Size : 18-3/8"H x 22"W x 1-1/4"D (2 Row) Inlet Connector Size : 1-1/2" Top Right Outlet Connector Size : 1-1/2" Bottom Right Top tank size : 2-3/4" x 21-5/8" Bottom tank size : 2" x 21-5/8" Transmission Oil Cooler Size : 12" Mount Type : Front Flange #527 ('67-'73 A-body HD w/slant-6 engine) Core Size: 17"H x 22"W x 1-1/4"D (2 Row) Inlet connector size: 1-1/2" Top Right Outlet connector size: 1-1/2" Bottom Right Top tank size: 3-3/8" x 21-5/8" Bottom tank size: 2" x 21-5/8" Transmission oil cooler size: 10" Mount type: Front Flange So as you can see, the only differences are slight (1-3/8" taller overall, slightly different top tank shape, better oil cooler in the later-model rad). Proliance is Modine's relatively new brand name for their aftermarket operations; it's not a buy-out. Radiator shop guys sniff lead fumes for a living, which explains a lot.

I am looking at the Spectra Premium. Can anyone tell me if it will fit my 64 Valiant slant 6?

Charger SXT: the opening on most '64s is only 18" wide. I have a factory V8 and its still was only 18" wide. I have seen 22" rads installed on these cars but the pass side is still blocked from the frame and gets no air flow. On my car I have opened up the opening to fit a '74 22" wide radiator. It is now larger of course but also sits centered in front of the block instead of off to one side like the /6 like.

Charger SXT I googled that radiator and found it on Summit Racing. They do not give the dimensions but it still looks like its only 18" wide. Are you trying to stay with a narrow factory 18" wide radiator? Or open it up to 22" for better cooling? I checked to see if Summit came up with the radiator by specifying your car and it did not. So I am not sure how you came up with that model number.

I still have the factory opening. The car has already been painted, so I'm not going to mess with cutting the opening. Since the car is going to...for now...just be used for pleasure (cruising, shows, etc.), I'm just going to stay with the factory size/style radiator. I actually found this specific radiator on the Spectra Premium website (http://ecat.spectrapremium.com/prod/All/cu354) as I was searching different models with the Slant 6. It isn't listed for the 64 (there are none listed for any A-body before 67 that I've found), so I've just been looking at the dimensions of those I do find. This one gives a core size of Height: 17-3/8 In. Width: 18-5/8 In. I have to call to get the mounting bracket/hole dimensions...and I haven't called on this one yet. I was wondering if anyone on here knew anything about it.
