Rewired and wired in a '94 Exploder power distribution block for the Dart. Works great. Use it for fan Hi / Lo, Headlamps Hi / Lo etc. Gives me a direct run of fused power etc. Question is though, I'd like to get new relays for it. Right now it has the Ford relays in it. Standard 5 prong type pushed in the box. Nothing wrong with that, but I'm always one to like new. Apart from that, being a scrapyard piece I've no way of telling how old or electrically used up the relays are. Nice to have new even if it were just for a back up. Looking for the best quality most reliable relays for the replacement.

I've looked at Rock Auto under the actual look up for the Exploder and they offer Standard, AC Delco and a few others. Range from around $5 to say $10 each. Having no knowledge of manufacture, don't want to buy a generic relay of marginal quality that is just packaged in a branded box as it were so don't know if any of these are actually higher quality or not or if you are just paying for the name stamped on the box.

Anyway, read that Bosch and Tyco (from what I understand Tyco bought Bosch) are the way to go. Comments?

What I'd be looking for is relays that do not have the tang coming off of the top of them so that they can be screwed to the fender. Guess I could cut that off, but rather not have to mess with them and just buy square push in relays that will go in the distribution box no problem.

Any good source of better quality relays that anyone knows of? Of course, perfer ones that do not cost me more than the car to purchase  Know you probably get what you pay for, but I don't need any gold plated terminals etc. Just a good quality sturdy relay that will take automotive use.

Using all the relays so far as NO on terminal 87 and the load capacity is fine at 20/30 from which I understand that the relay is rated at 30 Amp on NO operation. Fan says that it has a draw of about 23 amps with a surge above that on start up. Says all electrical should be able to handle 25 amps.

As a matter of interest, saw a seller on flebay selling 30/40 relays if I remember the designation right. In the description the seller places operation of a 20/30 relay at closing at a 30 amp load for a rated cycle of 100,000 times. Says that you can run the 30/40 amp and with the 40 amp side closing at only a 30 amp load the relay is rated at a cycle of 250,000 times. Is this wise? Is it true? Suggestions?

Each relay is fused on the 30 terminal by the way.

Guess off the original topic, but when I did the hi/lo on the headlamp circuit I used 12 g wire and have each fused at 20 amp. Sound okay fuse wise? Came up with the rating looking at various sites and books, but just want to make sure. Single headlamp each side and is Halogen. Made a bid difference in brightness doing the conversion I can tell you.

Thanks for your help. Always appreciated.

Cheers
