Keep a eye on it - check if there is an greasy layer forming on the rubber seal of the rad cap......still might be the start of a blown head gasket

I have just finished my Daughters 72 Valiant and currentley shaking bugs out before I turn it over to her. One of the bugs was a semi stopped up radiator that would rear it ugly head after riding around town for a while.I never noticed any bubbles or such in the year and a half that we have been putting this car together and the car was extremely well maintained with just a tick over 100,00 miles on it.It runs and idles great and gets good mileage. Back to the bubbles,like I said,there were no bubbles in the old radiator but the new radiator(a new unit from Advance Auto) shows some bubbles or suds after being revved up and coming back to idle.The first thing I thought was a blown head gasket but after looking at both radiators I noticed the the old original rad had a hood or shroud over the inlet in the top tank and the new one does not which allows the coolant to splash and churn more,also the new rad has a slightly narrower top tank than the original. Could the lack of a shroud in the inlet cause this effect on the coolant OR do I need get ready to pull the head. This car runs well and isnt losing any coolant and the oil isnt milky at all and the plugs read well.Thanks in advance for any advice and help. HyperValiant |

I think you probably don't need to worry; the foam was probably there with the old rad, but hidden by the deflector plate. |

I would just drive it,watching closesly,if it doest over heat or do anything wierd,just fore get about it and drive it,mark |

From experience; if gases from the combustion chamber are getting into the cooling system, the coolant tends to fill up the overflow bottle. Then when the temperature drops, the coolant stays in the overlow, and the radiator is low on water. |

Add a little "water wetter" to the system, that will reduce / stop the foaming you see. DD |

Thanks for all of the replys fellas,the car does have an overflow on it and the level does drop as the engine cools and rises after it has been run and gotten hot. It was *90 + here today and we drove it around for a while and it never got more than a little over halfway on the guage but we didnt do any interstate driving so there is more testing that needs to be done. An overflow tank and pressurized cap will help eliminate air from the cooling system. This will reduce corrosion and give you better heat transfer. It will also reduce coolant loss. especially during hot weather and/or hard driving. |
