Well my new radiator came (that was quick), but it's just got a flat black primer on it. Can anyone recommend a good quality paint that I can hit it with before installing it? I've got half a mind to just wait until my money situation is fixed and have it powdercoated... |

If I'm not mistaken, there a specific paint for radiators; check with your local radiator shop. If you powdercoat, don't attempt to do so on the fins. I'd be afraid of clogging up the airflow passages or interfering with the heat transfer. |

Will powdercoating stick to lead? I thought that the metal to be coated had to be magnatized ( lead can't be) to attract the coating material, also don't some torched soldered radiator leads start to melt around 360 degrees, and powdered metal coatings are heated to around 425 degrees? |

Hmmmm, good point. I'm honestly not sure what the solder's melting point is (I can't imagine it'd be lower than about 500 degree F), but God knows I sure don't want another leaky radiator...

I would just use a decent engine enamel. Wipe it down with something like denatured alcohol first. Whatever you do, do not paint the core at all. Black paint does not help heat transfer. It may be better that other colors, but any paint hurts heat transfer. It also makes it harder to keep the core clean later on. If it is a matter of appearance just fog the front as lightly as you can. |
