Post subject:  225 Exhaust system
I have been always wanting to improve the exhaust note on my dart, now remember, everything is stock, i was wondering if i could make the down pipe 2.5 inches and have it stretch all the way back and put a nice 2.5 inch Flowmaster 40 on it, or the loudest they got. Any suggestions ideas or concerns please reply to the thread, thank you

Hi

What you are planning to do is what I have done - but I am now getting ready to double the system and make it a true dual with an x crossover pipe - makes help u=output plus gets rid of the inline six drone

Will have long primary tube headers mad up locally

actually i just want a single pipe, i dont want any aftermarket dual pipes for my dart, i just want to increase the downpipe diameter to about 2-2.5 inches all the way out. Do you guys suggest that or any other size for a single pipe?

that is the biggest diameter pipe you will benefit from with your current configuration.
you want to reduce the diameter after the muffler to keep the velocity up as the gases cool down, otherwise it will sound tinny.

Okay so 2.5 down and back to the muffler, then 2 inch, or 1.75?

ACtually, should i get Flowmaster 40, or Flowmaster 40 Delta Flow?

You really only need 2.25

If you want quiet, get the biggest stock muffler (V8) that fits.

I am running the Thrush welded muffler $29.95 from Jeg's or Summit Racing, which is the same as a Flow Master 40 at a 1/4 the cost. It has a great sound and is not too loud either. We just took a trip with the car to the Ocean and found it to be a nice rich sound that doesn't drone. :D

I am running all 2.25" pipe all the way back.

well i want it to be noticeably loud, sorta like a race car loud but probably quieter. Ill look into that thrush Exhaust, i hope it is as good as flowmaster, and i might do 2.25 inch all the way like you did.

I just want it to sound like it has a good set of horses in it whenever i rev it, maybe have it backfire, who knows. I think it has a slight quiet backfire lol.

To put it in perspective that is what a set of long tube headers, with exhaust system, and cylinderhead porting installation of big valves with hardened seats will cost over here

If you compare the cut away view of the Thrush welded muffler and the Flow Master 40, you find them to be identical. If you crank the motor up to 3000 rpm it will be what you want. I cruise between 2200 and 2500 rpm so it is nice and smooth. After that it will wake up with a very sweat note! It is allot of fun. My wife thinks its great!

Give one a try, I think you will like it. If your running a rear lower than mine or a carb bigger than mine it will be louder. On half of our trip I ran larger jet #59, which made it a little louder note at cruise. On the way back I dropped back down to a #57 and it was much quieter. It got 24.5 mpg on the way home and had plenty of power with all the camping gear and the dog. On the way down we got 22 mpg.

as soon as i get a camcorder i will be posting vids of how my current setup sounds both in-car and drive-by so you can get an idea of what you are getting into. the sound is not for everybody.

id like to think i can cure the "bwOw" sound with a thrush muffler, but id have to hear it for myself before i toss out the flowmaster 40s i spent a good buck on.

if you look on greg ondayko's virtual dragstrip thread you will find youtube videos he posted of several rips he took down the track. the exhaust note is exquisite right through the rpm range. i do not know what kind of exhaust he is running or how much effect his hyperpak and cam profile contribute to the sound, but id be interested to know.

this is the kind of information we really need to have when deciding to sink a grip of cash on our exhaust sytems, fuel mapping is great but we all know all eyes are on us when we drive down the street and how we sound is just as important. so if you have a custom exhaust and a camcorder, dont be shy take a few fullthrottle runs past it and share the results with the rest of us~

That is exactly what im talking about, i just want a better exhaust system that wont land me at a 500-1000 dollar budget. I just want a single 2.25 inch pipe all the way with maybe flowmaster or the cheap one the Thrush ones that guy was talking about.

if you think a 500-1000 dollar budget is too much to spend on an exhaust system for your slant, well best of luck to you on trying to make an improvement over what you have now.

that is what my exhaust sounds like. i spent $1100 on it, not counting the dutra manifolds. it picked up about 20 horse.
