Post subject:  Ball Joint Socket Size

Does anybody know which socket size I will need for removing the ball joints on a 1960 Dodge?

It appears that Chrysler used 2 different sizes over the years...1 59/64" and 2 9/64". At $40 a pop, I want to make sure that I get the right one.

Thanks All

That is a special socket. Can you measure the ball joint? The smaller one fits the A body cars up until 1972, but I don;t know if your Dart is an A body car, or the larger B body. I suspect it is the larger size, but I would not want to be the one to mis-inform you, and I dont; know for certain. Why not just measure the ball joint?

I just did mine on my 66, I rented a kit from Advanced Auto. The kit had two sizes and I needed the smaller one, but I cant remember the size.

Actually I believe there are 3 different sizes; its been a while since I have seen aSnap on catalog; I have 2 of them; the one Im missing is the early A. I've never ever needed that one though. the smaller of the 2 I've got has done most Mopar cars Ive had to work on, (lots of "late-B", F-J-M bodies) the larger one I've used a bunch on trucks/vans; I think that the truck one also applies to C bodies.

Thanks for all of your replies.

I wasn't sure where to measured on the the ball joint. I assume across the flat sides. My measurement came out on the high side of 1 7/8", so I suspect that it is the 1 59/64" socket that is required.

Thanks for the tip on Advance Auto.

It's not a true rental, you pay for the kit(it was like $180) and then they refund ALL your money back when you return the kit.

I took the upper control arm off, flipped it over and put the ball joint in a vice. Then I stuck a pipe through the control arm holes and turned the entire arm. Used a pipe wrench to put the new ball joint in.
