Welcome to the site. Headers should fit all slant 6 engines as the heads are all basically the same in that area. The 170 engine is one inch shorter in the block deck height verses the 225. You should be able to tell by the waterpump "bypass" hose. On a 170 it is about an inch or so long. On the 225 it's about 2 to 3 inches long. Also on the front side of the head right below the valve cover near where the alternator bolts on should be some numbers. Your '63 should start with "T" and then have 17 (170 C.I) or 22 (225 C.I.) and some other numbers after that.

Post subject:  welcome wagon!

Welcome to the forum! If you have a 170 engine your header options are few to none. Because of the 1 inch lower block, headers will interfere with the steering box and numerous mods will have to be made to make them work. what year wagon is yours and what are your plans with it? Welcome again and in your spare time use the "search" function to learn a wealth of knowledge about our cars. :D

hey guys. thanks for the replies. here are the numbers from the passenger side of the block. 2202857-7. i found a couple sites with engine id numbers and it says its a 225. so that should make things easier. i guess my only other question is what determines a high or low mount starter. thanks again everyone for your help.

Take a look at picture number three.

This shows where a low starter is mounted.

Welcome to the site, the more wagons the better as far as I'm concerned. You can see my two '64s in my avatar and Lincarts wagon will be a total inspiration for your build since it's also a '63 and freakin' beautiful. You will also want to get up to speed with the common tune-up tips, fuel line mod and ignition upgrades that make driving these cars more user friendly.

Welcome on the board. Dutra Duals are a terrific exhaust option. Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread. Here is the valve adjustment procedure. Here is the Fuel line mod. There are many options for upgraded ignition; my preference is the HEI upgrade. Ask questions on here. There are many other improvements, mods, and build-up parts; you can upgrade everything from the brakes to the headlamps and the radiator to the taillamps!
