I am new to the forum.I read an article on this forum about a bent push rod but it didn't go into specifics. I have a '65 Valiant with a 170c.u. engine. I was told if the water hose going from pump to head was around 2" it was 170 and mine is about 1 3/4" so i assume its a 170 as opposed to 225c.u. with which the hose is supposed to be around 3" to 4". Is that a definite way to tell?
I have an exhaust push rod that got bent on the 4th cylinder from the front.I am wondering if all the slant 6 push rods are interchangeable and also if the adjustment is the same? 0.020 intake & 0.010 exhaust? Also can i buy individual push rods from parts stores?
I am not sure what happened to cause this as the car was being used by a friend of mine who historically mistreats automobiles and probably was running it hard with possible valve flutter that allowed enough slack for the rod to start out of its socket and get caught possibly on the edge of socket bending it. at least i hope this is the scenario and a new push rod and adjustment will remedy this. Any suggestions appreciated.
Found this car parked under an old shed long term but it has been driven about 300 miles before this ordeal, it has 61k on it and perfect interior but alot of body rust. It runs so well and the column shift is so sweet i plan on making it my daily driver. So i'll be coming to this forum frequently.
Any help you guys can give me on these questions will be greatly appreciated. This is my first slant 6 but from the ease of replacing this push rod i am liking it already, along with the other obvious easy to access issues that may arise in the future.
Also it has an A/C system that appears to be factory.did they have factory A/C in '65 model Valiants of the day?
Thanks again, Jimmy

Yes, you can buy just one pushrod from a parts store, but they will likely need to order it in. Valve lash is the same for 170s and 225s and the lash you mentioned it correct. A 170 uses 12 of the same the same pushrods as does the 225, but the 225 pushrods are longer.

I've looked through the archives and still not much info on the bent push rod drama, however i did find i do have a 170c.u. it had A 170 stamped on the block above #1.My valve seems to be seated properly and not frozen at the moment so i'm hoping it was just from lack of maintenance the rod came out and got bent. After 225 pages of scrolling and reading i just want to get away right now and get out in the open awhile
I appreciate your responses and VDart i have a friend with a few slant 6's but probably gonna be 225's so i may can pick up a rod there. if not i'll sure give you a hollar..thanks

What kind of engines it had doesn't matter, and slant 6 is really GOOD once you do few minor work to it to extract the untapped potiential of good old slant.

That would be good time to have head milled to raise compression ratio a bit.
And repair the valves stuff so they are not locked up when hot.

Cheers, Wizard

I appreciate the info, I've got one more person to contact for a push rod. Then I may contact the gentleman in this post that said he has some push rods, none of the parts houses carry them anymore for 170.I will give it one more chance by replacing the push rod. In the meantime i will get a valve job quote from my local machinist and maybe get some suggestions from you on milling. This is gonna be a 40 to 45 mph car tops, i live in country setting, speed, power etc don't interest me. Just a nice sound car that hits on all 6.
Great to see people of same interest, thanks again for sharing the knowledge.

I hope that is a misprint. The valves should be adjusted .010 on the intake, and .020 on the exhaust.

Push rod should be available from most any part store. Sealed Power RP-3079. Rock Auto shows them at $1.95 ea.

I finally got a 4-pak of push rods today from our N.A.P.A. I should receive next Monday. I appreciate the gentleman offering to send me push rods, and also the recommendations on what to do about my head issue. I'm gonna try this push rod and see what happens and go from there.I've only put like maybe 300 miles on the car since i acquired it. Now if i can keep lead foot out of it awhile and let things take their course at my speed we'll see how it goes. May be pulling the head for a valve job very soon. Appreciate the advice fellow members.
Jimmy
