How hard is it to remove the steering box on a slant 6 1963 Dart? Does the exhaust pipe need to be removed/cut away? I am heading to the scrap yard to remove a power box from a '65 Valiant and would like to be prepared for what the job takes. |

dropped right out on my V8 '64 Dart, but I never tried it on my /6. On the slant it should come out the top without drama. Make sure to grab the column, it's shorter. |

Junkyard Procedure, should be... loosen steering column from dash, loosen column plate from the firewall, pull the steering coupler (this year they used a sleeve with a bolt rather than a roll pin, I think).. pull the steering column... Next, get under car, pull the pitman arm bolt from the steering linkage (use PB blaster... and a good breaker bar)... once loose, use pickle fork to separate arm from link..., pull the three bolts that hold the box to the K-member... Go pay the yard $50 for the part, then go home and have a beer... -D.Idiot |

Thanks for the info. That was kinda what I was looking for. On my Dart, the exhaust pipe runs real close to the top of the steering box, making it hard to get to all the bolts. Also, I am guessing that after I grab the steering column, I can swap out the center shaft with mine and keep my old column. The scrap yard column has a column-shift auto and mine is push button, not exactly compatible. I can't think of why I could not swap the shafts. |
