I looked on car-part.com for transmissions for Aspen or Volare. I'm curious why 1975 shows nothing while 1976 shows plenty. What am I missing? Was there a big transmission switch in 1976? Thanks |

Models are kind of year specific , the f-body is a 1976-1980 only beast... when they do an interchange things can 'cross' the line for cars in junkyards... so like if you requested a 1978 Volare with a manual OD tranny it can pull any 1975-1976 A-body (dart, duster, valiant), or any 1976-1980 Aspen or Volare... the search may get 'fuzzy' if requesting an 'A904' (like a 1968-1989ish) type thing (there are some differences between the years like partial kickdown that may not get addressed by the search engine...) Good Hunting, -D.idiot I have over sized wheels and tires on my Valiant (Duster running gear) so I'll want a low end ratio of 3.09, best I can tell. Is there any marking on the trannies indicating low end ratios? |

Actually I used Aspen and Volare for lack of something better. I probably should have said Dart. I've picked up in reading that there was a 3.09 ratio A-833 made in 1975 and up to ?. That would NOT be from a big car.I don't know the chances of finding, for instance, a 1975 4-speed Dart Slant 6 tranny. I'd guess very slim. Altho I read that they existed. Thanks |

my A-833OD has a 3.09 first, 1.75 second, 1:1 third, and 0.73 fourth. the tranny is nice but with a 225-60-15 tire, i have to slip the clutch in first a lttle more than i like to get going. i have 3.23 gears in a 8.25 axle. i just got a Tremec TKO-500 5 speed and it has a 3.27 first which should make burnouts, i mean getting going a lot nicer. the overdrive is also a 0.68 which will bring down rpm a little at cruise. the problem i have now to get the tranny in is to get a bell housing "fixed" to accept the TKO bolt pattern. zedpapa |

Interesting. I'm not sure of my rear end ratio, but I have 195 tires. Assuming the same, a tire utility program tells me that if 3.27 is right for 225 tires, 3.09 is right for 195 tires. I suppose I could check on the overall usefulness of this info by checking it against the 2.46 ratio with original tires.zedpapa In any case the 3.09 would have to be better than the 2.46 right now. All A-833OD's got the 3.09 1st, 1.67 2nd, and 1:00 3rd, with .73 OD... If you can't one locally, but have a high rear ratio (like 2.76-2.94), you might luck out and get an A-230 3 spd, to hold you over... It has a slightly kinder 2nd gear... with: 3.08 1st, 1.70 2nd, and 1:00 3rd... this works fine in by '67 with 2.94 rear gears... as an FYI... the bellhousing is separate from the tranny, so it doesn't really matter what you got the tranny from (1972 Demon 340...A-833 close ratio box...A-745 peanut box...etc...although the 'truck'/B/E body trannies will be a bit longer...), just as long as you have a bell to go with it...(although the 18 spline 'hemi' A-833 might be pushing it for finding a clutch disc to work with your slant...) So if you were looking for say a 1975-1980 A/F body with an A-230, you could use a 1975-1980 A-833 OD bellhousing, then slip a 1975-1980 A-833OD in there when you find one in good shape... If you are wanting a 1970's A-833 close ratio 4 speed, you would need a 1967-1974 slant six 4 speed bellhousing...etc.... So don't strictly limit your search to one year of something... you might get luckier if you search for the bellhousing, then see who has the tranny... good hunting, -D.Idiot |
