Last year when I bought my 78 Fury, one of the 1st things I had to do to it was to replace the hissing brake booster. Figuring that for $5 difference, it was not worth buying the "unloaded" booster; (not including the master) at the time I debated whether to split off the "new" reman master and retain the original master with the fresh booster. Pedal was literally rock hard with the orig master and booster. I wound up using both the fresh reman parts as I bought them, and I saved the original M/C. (had another in the shed to throw back in the box for the core) Well now a whole 1700 miles on the car later, the reman master has taken a dive. While I would never think about going to the junkyard for a used master (I've been asked more than once, when I turned wrenches for a living), since I had this one on THIS car, and the master was not the issue then, I'm thinking of reinstalling it. In the meantime, I have to go back tomorrow when the store manager is in, to see whether they'll honor the "lifetime" warranty on just the master, or whether I'd have to exchange the whole booster and master. I hope not, as I already had to paint this booster (came bare) and I'm not as crazy about underdash work as I once was. I am also gonna see whether they can either get me a brand new master OR a rebuild kit for this original, if it winds up needing it, as I know this original one has not been thru the reman mill. Though I have not rebuilt a master since probably high school or community college auto shop I think it would be a better option than taking a chance on another reman unit. Though I had to bite my tongue as my buddy brought over his 83 GMC 3/4 ton with a bad master a couple days ago, and a reman was all I could get for that one; I'm wondering how long before HE calls back for another M/C replacement? As far as remans go, master cylinders and carbs have to be the worst, as far as "bad remans" go; I tend to have better luck with reman starters/
alternators, but not by much.

Have them ship in the M/C and booster.

Take the new M/C for yourself and put the bad M/C on the new booster and return the pair (old M/C, new booster) to them........

The problem with that solution is that he still ends up with a reman master cylinder. As I read the original post, the MC only cost $5.00 additional, so to me it's not worth a lot of hassle. I would try to work out an exchange for a new MC or a repair kit for the old one but otherwise I would cut my losses and chalk it up to experience.

though they specialise in stainless sleeving master cylinders, i think they also do standard rebuilds, and they are not remanufacturers; all their clients are classic car owners and industrial businesses like dealerships and repair garages so they are directly accountable to the end user. shipping to IL should not be that unreasonable and i can personally vouch for their work.

A reman M/C by itself w/o a booster attatched is $23., they show a number for a new Bendix M/C; I don't know why it would be worth only $5 for that same reman M/C when bought attatched to a reman booster. The flunkys there are telling me that the only thing THEY can do would be to warranty the whole assembly; master and booster. I was told to go see the mgr., tomorrow, as they think HE can O.K. just a M/C without the booster; Its a PITA to lay under the dash and pull the booster; if that's the case, I'll ask for flat rate to pull a so far good part "just" to satisfy their warranty terms. AND HAVE the new booster painted as I had to do this one; it was bare steel whan I got it. The orig from '78 master is back on there and working fine, with less of the charecteristic "touchy brakes" of the late B bodys that I had with the reman master that came with the booster. So whatever they offer me as a warranty will sit on my shelf in case that 30 year old one screws up. What I'm hoping is that they will credit the $23 that "just" a M/C goes for towards the price of a brand new one; they show a Bendix one on the screen for $60. If they insist on having the booster back, I'll probably not do anything, but I won't be happy with Advance Auto; lately they have been blowing away the previous unbeatables in town; especially on Moog front end parts (that was always car Quest around here) It isn't the cost factor, as much as the idea behind it; They did sell it to me with a lifetime warranty and I would have expected that lifetime to be far more than the 1700 miles I had it on there. I know I do NOT want another reman M/C to put back on there.

Well the store mgr wouldnt do anything unless I yank the booster back ou and swap the assembly. Ain't happening unless the booster also craps out; I guess this reman M/C goes out with the garbage for the scrappers to fight over.

Can't you just get the M/C , booster pair and say you'll return a M/C , booster pair after you install it......................

I just spoke to my local Advance Manger. Was told your manager can do the M/C only exchange. Go to the Advance website, and send an e-mail to corporate, telling your problem, and let them take care of it.

Thought so, Charlie; Thanks. I was wondering about a corp. website/ phone # but have kind of forgotten about it since it regained its pedal with the orig M/C back on there. Besides I've been busy with other things the last couple days. I've also thought about ordering in an assembly and putting the bum M/C on the fresh booster. But ultimately I would like a NEW M/C as a spare rather tham another reman. But I was just trying to bring up yet another reman failure. (big surprise there, huh?)  :?

Sad part is that lots of parts for our old cars are reman. The new parts are worth the money often times for the better quality but it's really hard for us averages joes to afford. The chinese have us over a barrel 90% of the time, buy junk or do without :(

Nope; I do my best to avoid that Chinese crap more so than even a reman.
Well I E mailed Advance's warranty link (3X since the 1st 2 were returned "mailer-Daemon--- don't like recipient"... Huh? I can't just hit the link and E mail away; I have to go thru my server's E mail, as it don't "take" thru Int. Explorer. Thats what I get for being a computer idiot. I think this one got thru, since it's been overnite, and no "returned E mail" yet. Also, I asked the guys at the web address, about getting a NEW M/C (They show em in the Bendix brand on the screen) and paying the diff between the $23 reman M/C price and the $60 new price. And I asked that the corp. guys not be "too hard" on the mgr there, as I used to but alot of parts from this guy at a past job of his, also because of the line of B.S. my Dr is giving me "hope for the best/prepare for the worst," instead of giving me anything "concrete" about the prospect of my returning to my steel mill job, I have talked to the mgr., at this Advance about the prospect of working there, should my "return to work by" date, comes and goes, without a release from the Dr. I'm sure it would go over like a lead balloon, if I report him to Corp., and then apply for a job down the road, huh? I'm hoping to avoid that scenario, as a "grocery store" type parts store counterman pay is waaaay less than I've gotten used to the last 3 years. (I worked at an Auto Zone as a 2nd job, some years back, so I know a little about how that game works) Probably even that manager's pay, I'd guess. But if the "butcher" (doctor) won't release me to go back to where I was, I gotta do something! I know that Raybestos still shows a P/N for a brand new one in their book; if no headway is made thru Corp., I guess I trash this one and go down the road and buy the new Raybestos; As someone else brought up, even if I have them order-in another booster-M/C combo and return it with the fresh booster/bad reman M/C, combo, I still wind up with another reman M/C. I am not really that worried about it, as long as I got it working now, but this car ain't getting any newer, so I'd like to "get while the gettin' is still good" so I don't have to worry about gettin' something when it becomes unobtainable.
