Crazy - while giving the valiant a tuneup I put on a new cap and rotor (rotor was old stock, came with the car). Got a ticking sound, investigated and found it was the rotor hitting the cap.

Tried a different rotor I had and 'crack' stripped distributor gear. At least I had a spare distributor laying around that I could rob the gear from to get it going again.

Anyone seen this? Cap is a good one - Echlin that the NAPA guy said was better than others. Guess it's another sign of the crap quality of most aftermarket parts these days.

Actually, the Echlin cap is the troubled one that's usually ground off-center. Take a look at the posts inside the cap and see if they are all ground equally.

Not very - that's clearly the problem.

I just read some other posts on this issue from Dan, so now time to get another cap.

Damn...they're still grinding the Echlin MO-40/MO-4000 caps off centre?! I first saw this problem in 1993! Get a Standard-BlueStreak CH-410X cap instead.
