It's a caustic solution — lye, for example. Beyond that, I'm not sure. I've had good results stripping iron, steel, copper, brass, and bronze parts (no aluminium or zinc die-cast!) by spraying them with ordinary oven cleaner, which is a lye gel, letting the cleaner soak in and dry, then hosing the parts down with water (hot if possible). |

There are several types of "hot tanking" The caustic solution type of tanking is giving way to Jet Tank cleaning in some areas b/c of environmental regulations. Jet Tanking is just that, high pressure jets with a non-caustic degreaser/cleaning solution. I have also heard of, but have no experience with, a process whereby the engine parts are heated until everything on them turns to ash. Paint, greast, dirt, oil all burned to ash. Then washed away. Some restoration companys like US Car Tool are using this process on complete chassis during rotisserie restorations. CE |
