Post subject: | Inside Hood Release |
Just last night I was laying down watching tv and I see a couple walking around my valiant opening the hood and whatnot. Turns out they thought it was for sale. Umm ever heard of asking first? Kids these days. Which brings me to... the hood release on my 68 valiant. Has anyone changed the original release for one that's inside the car? This really bugged me, for one they trespassed but also just opened the hood. Is it possible and how hard would it be to change this? Thanks, Dan |

I have a inside hood release lock from JCWhitney that I never got around to installing; I think they still sell it or the better model. It has a keyed lock that pushes a stiff cable that inserts a pin into a bracket. It also has a wire inside that shorts to ground to disable the ignition when locked. There's a higher end model with a solid tube, but mine just has a BX cable-like flexible spiral metal armor. You could hacksaw through it if you had to, but it would take some effort. I never installed it because I didn't want to drill through the firewall. Personally, I've never had a battery stolen since I installed a JCW hood lock & chain to hold the hood shut, but then heard stories around Detroit of the hoods being bent 90 degrees to steal the battery anyway. |

I installed one after I swapped in the barracuda grill and could no longer reach the latch without a screw driver. it's a little crude but it works. I believe it was just a generic choke cable. routed it thru the dash and up the hood, modified the latch to accept it and viola. nothing to it. |

I grabbed one on Ebay for a later model Dart, but haven't gotten around to adapting/installing it yet. |

Thanks guys. I think I'm gonna rig one up. It wouldn't have been a problem if I had parked my car in the backyard before I started working on it (its all fun and games like my mom used to say). Back there my dogs watch out for everything, in the front the cats watch out for nothing. But its too late now with it up on stands until I finish the brakes and whatnot. Thanks again, Dan |

I saved the inside hood latch from the 74 Valiant I parted and never put it on my Valiant. |

I have one I removed from a '75 Valiant Brougham, complete. The latch has been bead blasted, too: PM me if you're interested. Casey |
