With the slant six distributor installed correctly, how far (in terms of degrees) should you be able to advance it?

Thank you

Depending on what distributor hold-down system you are using and the presence of any obstructions in the path of the vacuum advance can, you should be able to alomst completely swing the distributor 360 degrees.

However, remember that distributor position is all relative. If you need to advance or retard the timing a whole bunch, simply shift all spark plug wires forward or reverse one tower on the cap. I have had to do this several times on different motors.

The average range on a distributor, once properly installed, is roughly 40-60 degrees.

If you used the slotted plate off your stock dizzy and you positioned the plate bolt in the middle, and have the block bolt in the middle, it usually will allow a swing of +/- 10 degrees at the crank....

It's the old hold-down plate. It is at about 10* BTDC. I would like to advance it 3-4* more but the plate butts up against the block preventing further movement.

Then you will have to undo the bolt holding the plate to the distributor and index it for a bit more advance... (use a distributor wrench for it, or pull the dizzy and use a regular wrench)
