Post subject:  Water Temp Questions

What is a good water temp for a 74 225? My water temp gauge reads almost 200 on cool days (about 80 outside) and about 220 on hot days (about 90+ outside). I am looking for a fan shroud
(see: http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... 398#197398 )
I already have a 7 blade fan, don't know if this is factory or not.

I just changed stats on mine due to the 90 degree weather. I was running a 195 stat so it was between 190 and 210. It was around 200 allot.

With a 180 stat it runs 180 most of the time. When sitting in traffic stop and go on hot days it will creep up to 210 and turn on the electric fan. Most of the time it doesn't come on. The air blowing through the radiator is enough on90 plus days. It is just the stop and go that causes it to cycle.

My motor is a mild build and is jetted fairly lean (#55) at the moment so it runs a little hotter.

The ProComp fan has a small shroud on it.

Four blade is stock, not seven.

Get the clutch fan from Summit. I ran one for two years and it was awesome!

I went to an electric fan to get more heat. and better mileage.

My engine used to run warm before the rebuild, but after the acid clean it runs on the cool side.

Seven is for cars with HD cooling or A/C... especially on heavily optioned cars... late A-bodies you won't see that much, they usually got the fan shroud and 5 blade clutch fan... but I have seen a few high option 4 door Valiants with the 7 blade fixed and radiator shroud too....

Well, someone must have added this fan, because I assure you this was no high dollar car. The most expensive option (and probably only) on it is power steering. This is your regular, run of the mill duster. So, maybe if I run a lower stat, it will run cooler? I may try the clutch fan, how much is it?

The clutch fan that will fit properly you can get from Summit Racing.com is $117.95. I ran one for two years before going to a electric fan. It works very well and will help on the mileage. The 180 degrees Super Stat will help too.

Thanks, I might just try that in the next few weeks.
