Post subject:  A Body Front Drums

Does anybody know where I can get a set of cheap (new), or good used (that can be turned) front drums for a 74 A Body? The only place I have found that has them is Auto Zone @ $98 a Piece! No other place carries them anymore. I can't convert to disc brakes, because they have a 4 1/2" bolt pattern on them (so I have heard, correct me if I am wrong) and I don't want to loose my cragars. I just don't have the money/time to do it. Can anyone help me with this?

Well I found it. $65 a drum is more like it, but they come without the studs and stuff, and I know they remove from the old ones, how do I do this? Do I have to get them pressed out/in?

Yep. Since you don't own a press (most of us don't), just take everything to your local machine shop and have them do it. SHOULD be cheap. I'd save the effort and $$ of pressing the old studs out and go with NEW studs, though.

I will compare the prices and make my decision on that, but new studs do sound nice. Thanks! :D

The studs are "swedged" onto the drum and hub. You cannot just press the studs out. The swedge must be cut first, or the holes in the hub/drum will be damaged, and the new studs will not fit properly.

New studs are definitely the way to go here. And new lug nuts, while you're at it.
There's no way of telling what the old hardware has been subjected to.

I know you said you wanted to save money but if you want front Disc brakes 72 and under A body 4 piston stock Disc brakes have the 4 inch bolt pattern. You will have to get the spindle, rotor, caliper, hoses, prop. valve.

What year does that stop at? Will only 70-72 disc brakes work or does it go older than that? I don't really know what years can go on a 74 Duster. Otherwise, that sounds like a good idea!

I can't say what year they started maybe 67 I have a 69 dart they came on.The only thing you need to check is your upper A arm ball joint these are the small one which is the early A body disc and drum brakes. (67-72 disc 65-76 drum) You can try the junk yards if you know of any with cars this old other wise check with some of the used parts vendors in the Mopar mags. Bad thing is with the vendors they want around $350.00 and sometimes you have to get new rotors and maybe calipers. I was able to get both at my local parts store.
