Someone slashed one of my tires again... 2nd in several months. Now I have 205/70/14 on all fours. I have 2 good old tires, 195/75/14. I'm giving up on all 4 matching since at this rate they will likely be slashed before they are worn from use. Thats a 0.39" narrower width, 0.22" shorter height difference. Is this too much a difference for either 2 front or 2 rear tires? It costs me $75 for a new tire with road hazard and mount/balance. Each mount/dismount is $10 - If I were to swap 2 tires, thats $40, + balance, getting close to the new tire cost. Safety first, car wear/tear second, frugality third, how would you do it? |

Pierri i would put 2 good old tire's on the front because they are narrower then 205/70/14.and you should have more grip at the rear rather then the steering where you can control it. but if you can afford it you should get new set or at least 2 new and put those one's on the front .. |

Mount both old ones on rear and keep the 205 as a spare. I would not mix on the same axle. I assume you have an extra rim? If not, talk to me. Lou |

The width difference is not gonna hurt the differential, but the diameter difference could; that's only one reason, that the space saver "donut" spare tires that are so common these days, are marked as "temporary" spares. and those numbers of "difference" sound nice, and you'd think every tire from ANY manufacturer of a given size, would be dimensionally identical, given equal wear? Nope. Even the FSM shows a difference in their speeodometer drive pinion chart, for different brand tires of the same size; I don't remember what year this FSM was but I distinctly remember it being a truck or van manual, that showed a 1 tooth difference in the gear required; both in this case were a P235/75/R15, but whether the vehicle came with Goodyear or Michelin tires, even in the same size, took different speedo pinions. Put another way; My 2001 Cherokee (not a "grand") had P 225/75/15s on it when I got it; I replaced them with P235s; Dayton Timberline was the 1st set; they would rub when turned tight to either side; When we wore them out, I went with a set of Kelly Safari SJRs; again P235s; same rims; Same size as the Daytons, but guess what: NO RUB! Being both the same size, you would not think that would be possible. so take those Dimensional (so much shorter or wider/narrower) with a grain of salt. |

Oh 1 more thing; Just because both front tires are the same size, and both radials, don't necessarily make it OK; having different tread patterns on the same axle can cause a pull to the side of the tire with more "grip". Buying used tires here and there because of a couple of loose vandals around you, to "try and save money" is understandable; though often they seem more tempted to slash new tires than used looking ones; I think its a "spite" thing; (I spent years working in various tire/alignment shops; seems it came in waves we went thru a few spats where all the cars parked on a certain block or 2, were slashed on a given nite) but just be forewarned that it may make your car drive different than you might be used to. A better solution? Hide in a tree somewhere and if anyone comes near your car, either have a paintball gun or something, with you and nail them in the act! You might think of paint ball as a "game" but those things can STING when being hit with one. Then call the cops and tell them that the person costing you all this money, should now be easy to find! |
