Post subject:  Torque converter engagement

Hello everyone,

I'm having quite a bit of a problem with my torque converter : it won't engage far enough (not engaged on the oil pump?).
Could it be that it's not the right one? Are all slant sixes converters the same? The engine and box come from a 72 or 73 charger but the TC comes from a 67 (as far as I can tell).

Is there something I need to know? Some kind of black magic or rain dance to do?

Thanks for your help, I have to get the engine in by the end of the week!!!

Marc

In the US, we have 2 different 904 transmission input shaft spline sizes with different tooth counts. You must use the torque converter that matches the input shaft of the trans.
What is the out side diameter and spline count of your transmission?

Hello Doc,

Thanks for your input.
What are the sizes I should look for? I don't have them right now but will check first thing in the morning.
Thanks,

Marc

The input shaft spline count changed for the 1968 model year on US cars. Earlier transmissions had a smaller input shaft with fewer splines than the '68 and later transmissions and torque converters. I would count the splines on both the converter and the transmission. Make sure to count the smaller splined shaft not the reaction shaft.

Going off memory...
60-67 are 3/4 (.750) diameter with 18 splines
68 & up are 7/8 (.875) with 27 splines.
