225 with loud knocking around #5 piston. Pulled wire off of #5 and knocking goes away. Alot of white smoke when reving when cold. when let off of gas knocking goes up for about 5 seconds then subsides. Burns alot of oil. Fresh oil change and knock subsides for a few hundred miles. Still very good power. Checked converter bolts, very tight. Bearing old but tight. No metal in pan. From bottom, after removing rod cap, without resistants I was able to push up down and twist piston with rod inside cylinder. Help! |

How's the oil pressure? What's the actual rod bearing clearance? |

This seems common. Usually this is oiling issues due to the drilling slightly off that pinches off the oil path to the crankshaft bearing. Take a look, while it's apart and measure stuff, check for that oiling partially plugged stuff. Cheers, Wizard |

if you haven`t stop driving the car stop now, you have over lapped the rod bearing , i had this happen to me about 30 years ago on my first slantsix, same symptoms as your only i kept driving trying to sort it out and ended up putting the rod out behind the power steering pump. i had good oil pressure because the bearing flattened and blocked the oil passage to the rod journal, take care you might save the crank |

It sounds like you removed the pan and checked the bearing, and it's OK.Based on that, I would guess it's a piston problem, either a worn wrist pin or a cracked piston... waiting to come apart. DD |

Sorry for the delay. Shortly after I post I started to get alot of water in my oil. I took the head off and couldn't find any issues. I got tired of dealing with it so I did a quick rebuild on a junk yard engine and put it in, vroom vroom I'm on my way and very happy. Yesterday I took the oil pan off the old slant 6 (mind you I did this months ago) and found piston skirts in the pan. I'm assuming the rings wore out and piston rubbed a hole into the cylinder, thus causing water in oil. Sound right? Its a boat anchor now, but I'm back on the road and got the home association off my back. |
