I just pulled the 1979 slant out of my van and installed a reman from a 1963 valiant. It runs good but does not seem to have the power my old engine once had. I reused all the original intake and electronic ignition, I stayed with the carb that came on the 1963 motor,(it seems to run way better with this one). I was just wondering what is some tricks to get some more nuts out of these engines? I assume getting a 2 barrel intake and carb, or anything else? It is a daily driver so I dont want to compromise the fuel millage or dependibility to much.

what motor was in the van originally? was it the same size as the replacement motor? if the valiant had a 225 and the van had a 292 or something larger that could explain the slight power loss, but theres also that chance that the other car had a 318. but thats just my guess/off the top of my head. was the original van bored out? or had any machining done to it?

Run a compression test on the new engine and tell us the readings.
Did you do a final valve lash adjustment after getting it running?

Could be a retarded cam due to installation or a regrind without enough advance.

Start with the basics- what's your ignition timing?

That was gonna be my first question too. When you're lost, go back to sqare one and check everything until you know where you are. The basics will kill you. :D
