So I swapped out my stock 72 Swinger to a Super Six. Everything is done except for the accelerator cable (which is on its way). I decided to crank her up and see if she starts...SHe did but only for about 5 seconds. During that time I noticed some white smoke coming from the intake/exhaust, a very high rev and a burnng smell....is this normal?

Starts, revs high then quickly stalls... usually that tells you that there is a vacuum leak.
Is the PCV valve hooked-up?
Are any unused vacuum ports on the carb, plugged?

There will be some smoke and smell off the exhaust manifold as it burns-off any paint, grease or fingerprints.

vacuum ports are all sealed and good to go...the carb is all sealed off. I had a small leak of gas at the fuel line on the carb but fixed that. Is is ok the use a sealant on the brass bolt?

Are you using the choke?
Is the flap closing completly?

yes I have the choke on it and it seals properly...Im going to try to adjust it a little

discovered one of the problems... the top gasket on the carb is leaking fuel.

The top cover gasket should be above the fuel level. If you have fuel leaking there then you have another problem causing flooding. The possibilities include dirt between the needle and seat, a maladjusted float or a bad float.

thanks joshie...The guy I bought the carb from said he rebuilt it 6 months ago. I guess Ima have to pull it and mess with it.

Ok I had a guy tell me to pull the carb and shake it to get the float unstuck...is this true or is he pulling my crank

The answer is "Yes" For real though that might work to unstick it now but the question remains why is it stuck or perhaps adjusted to high.Sounds like you need to pop the top and see whats going on in there,ie,junk in the needle or float set a bit high.Good luck.

Yes, these fellas probably got you on the right track. If that doesn't do it, and if you still have white smoke, ... (just for in the back of your mind) White smoke, often times, is an indicator of water into combustion. That then would mean water jacket, head gasket. etc.

I am thinking you are starting at a good place in fuel. Sounds like your carb is not working correctly anyways. Good luck
