Post subject:  Found me an Offy!

Whoo hoo! I just scored a new Offenhauser 4 barrel off eBay. Got a decent price for it too if I don't say so myself. Well, it's a fair stretch cheaper than J.C. Whitney or Summit had it listed for.

This is big! My first real performance upgrade for the Valiant's engine in over 8 years.

Now I just need to pick a carb. And I've already heard enough about the Holley 500 2bbl vs the Holley 390 4bbl to make my head spin, so that's not me trying to spark another debate. ;)

Anyway, I was just really excited and thought I'd share.

(And please don't tell me what a "real" good deal is until I've had some time to bask in the afterglow. I'd like to pretend I'm a smart shopper for at least a day or two. :D)

I bought a really dirty one for $120. It looks pretty good now though.

Sounds good. Nice street/track intake there. I have been using one, and on several buildups since 1989.

What did I just say about not telling me what a "real" good deal was??? :x

Just kidding. :) That's a good price for a little extra elbow grease.

And thank you all for sharing my joy. Not many other people around here can relate. I've gotten everything from my supportive wife's, "That's nice. What does it do?" to "You're actually putting money into that engine?" to "A what for your what?"

*sigh*

Anyway, here's a picture of the new bundle of joy.

I ran an Eddy 500 cfm a long time on mine before changing to a Holley.
If you want a known good Eddy at a fine price, lemme know. As all will tell you, the Eddy works great and is a bolt on and go carb.

Sounds interesting, Rock. Why did you switch to the Holley? What kind of choke does the Eddy have? I'd really like to have an electric choke on my setup. Shoot me a PM or post some more info and we can talk about this more.

(And yes, 68Barracuda, I'm deeply grateful that my wife can tolerate my sundry hobbies. :))

Congrats on the new addition to the family! Will you be turning your 4bbl for better fuel distribution? There are some decent posts on this topic. Are you going to bolt it up to the stock exhaust or will you upgrade that as well? Send us some pics after ya get'er installed!

Ah, to have a garage! I live in an apartment complex, so all I have is a giant parking lot. Maybe someday.

Thanks! I'm kinda wavering now on which way to go with the carb. I'm going to do a bit more research before I decide. I'd love to go Dutra on the exhaust, but we'll see how my budget works out. I've also heard Clifford Shorties are nice, but you have to wait for them to pop up online. Both are pretty flexible at this point.

 Not if he has to share it with the woman's tools and car parts..

Granted, I live in an apartment, so a garage/shop space is a dream. But it'll be interesting living with two other slant 6ers in one apartment. Already we need to find more room to store extra parts, and right now there's only two of us!

Chuck, I am on a tight buget as well. I bit the bullet and bought the Dutras. My project is more hot rod than A-body so the split manifolds work well with the theme. All I can say is if you buy with Doc you will not be disappointed. Carb wise-I have long been a fan of Carter now Edlebrock carbs. Bolt on and go. But now thinking seriously about Holley 390. Good luck with your upgrades!
