What does this term refer to exactly and what does it cover? All the trim parts and such and such have the same matching numbers, but not sure about the engine and tranny. Oh, and I didn't buy my car as a numbers matching. I bought it from a guy who only works on fox body mustangs and old jap cars. He was just trying to get rid of it. |

"Numbers Matching" means a vehicle that has its original engine, transmission, and whatever other original major components were stamped at the factory with a portion of the car's VIN. It is a grossly over-used (and abused) term in advertising and selling cars. |

Honestly I can not agree with that statement more. In searching ebay and craigs list I come across that term quite often. Chris |

Many of the numbers can be faked anyway. |

Another aspect is that parts that don't have a VIN, but do have some sort of date code on them will match the time frame of when the car is produced. i.e. an alternator with a date code just slightly earlier than the production date of the car. |

Many of the parts of the basic body have numbers on them too. |
