Post subject:  What Four Barrell Carb Should I Use?

Hey everyone. I just bought a Offenhauser 4 bbl off Ebay. And I am wondering what carb will work best. Heres the specs of my engine.. it is a 198 with 41 k orig miles and a three speed. I now have the manifold and a set of Clifford headers, I will be pulling the head off and doing valve work probably 170 and 144 valves I will also port and polish the head while I have it off. My best buddy has a machine shop so I can do all of this work myself. Also I am thinking of changing the cam while it is apart. Since you guys have more experience with slant sixes than me I wanted your opinions.

By the way I have a super six setup for sale if anyone is interested. I have the manifold (cast iron) newly bead blasted and painted blue. I also have a rebuilt carter BB two barrell and the air cleaner with the super six decal as well as the throttle return spring mount. ( MAKE ME AN OFFER)Thanks in advance Wayne PS I love the forum you guys are great. :D

So you're the one! Ha! I watched that one sell last night. Congratulations. I bought mine the day before.

You're right, this is the best place to be for slant six advice. You're probably going to get plenty of tips on which carb to use. I asked a similar question recently. I'm guessing you're going to get some people saying Holley 500 2 barrel with an adaptor plate and the rest saying Holley 390 4 barrel. Do a quick search and you'll find a lot of the pros and cons of both.

I have to ask, were you able to get your headers directly from Clifford? I'm thinking of getting some for my Valiant, but I'm still wavering between them and Dutra Duals. Just curious about your set up.

Yes I bought the headers directly from Clifford. Very nice people to deal with. Yeah I thought I got a great deal. By the way I also have a Valiant 1970, just put a floor shifter in it. I bought the car because I had a new one in 1970 and it wa a great car. It had a floor three speed shifter from the factory.

Interesting. I've heard very mixed reviews about Clifford. Was this a recent purchase? I heard recently there had been issues with them.

Nice to have another Valiant around. They're great cars. I've head mine for 11 years now. It was my first car and God willing it'll be my last. Sounds like I'm about the same stage as you with intakes and such. You may want to check out this post here for a good list of other engine upgrades. Also, use the search button and you'll be amazed what has been discussed already. I've already saved a ton of money on worthless upgrades I didn't need just by looking around.

Holley 500 2 barrel with an adaptor plate
You may want to just get the Holley 350 with adapter plate instead. Lou can correct me if i'm wrong, but the 500 would be too much anyways, especially on a stock slant.

In a related note, I am currently working with a few other members to fine-tune my Holley 350. I hope to write an article in the next month or 2 with pictures.

Holley economaster 4360
Yikes! Who let Chevy boy in here? The 4360 was a Holley designed
replacement for the Quadrajet, it has some merit in the design...
unfortunately it's not as 'Economaster' as it sounds... a regasket set
for this carb weighs in around $75-100... where as the regasket kit
for the standard 4150/4160 Holley is about $25....

Also the Holley 4360 is a 'spreadbore' like the Quadrajet and Carter Thermoquad... so for proper action, you will have to add an adaptor
plate on top of your Offy mounting plate... (you didn't need that extra
inch of clearance, right?)

Just as an FYI.

Either of the afore mentioned carbs will work fine, the 8007-390 cfm, would be great, has good tuneability, and can get decent mileage once you
dial in the secondary opening spring and get the jetting set right... the
Edelbrock 500, is also recommended... the Holley 2300 in the 350 would be good for a 'stockish' engine, the 500 might dial in, but it will take some tuning....

Good luck, before you buy the carb, get a book on your carb and read it...
the pictures and instructions will help your selection process better.

Awww, I like my 4360!

Another good one would be the 400 or 500 CFM Carter AFB.

LOL... it works great, especially if you use it as a replacement for the carb on say a Ford engine, where less CFM and good responce plus better MPG always is a bonus...

Holley most times = junk. C-A-R-T-E-R 400 A-F-B is what you most likely want.

400afb, 390 4150/60 holley, 350 2300 holley - bigger than these are a waste

  You nailed it. I really like the 4360 on my 84 Ford van. It has a 351W H.O. motor and gets about 22 MPG opn the highway if I keep my foot out of it. It should do better when I swap on the Offy dual-port intake.

But I also really like Carter AFBs/Edelbrock performers. Very easy to tune and a durable carb.

Actually, with a 198 you might actually be happier with a two barrel unless you are turning very high RPMs. I once measured the runner diameter on an Offy and it is actually smaller than the runner diameter on a stock intake. This will help with low RPM torque a bit. I recommend you use the Offy intake but put a Holley 2280 two barrel carb on it.
