| Post subject: | Once in a while knock |
So, every once in a while my slant knocks. It always starts fine, and takes a minute or two. As soon as it starts, I shut it down. Wait a minute or two and it starts up w/o a problem, no knocking again for months on end. This has happened once before. Whats up? |

How many miles are on this engine? What grade of engine oil are you using, and what brand and type of oil filter? |

77k but unsure if original. I use 10w30 with a NAPA Gold filter. |

Try the NAPA 1806 filter and your problems may go away. The filter has a full length internal stand pipe so the filter will stay full of oil, for a no knock start up. |

Your oil choice sounds fine, and the NAPA Gold filters are of good quality. As Ted says, the #1806 filter does indeed do a better job of holding oil in the filter after shutdown, ready for next startup. But given that you're already using a good-quality filter and not something cruddy like a Fram, you may want to service the oil pressure relief valve, too, in case it is dirty and jammed partway open (or occasionally sticking partway open), bleeding off pressure and causing slow buildup and knocking on startup. Do you mean the engine starts up fine and then doesn't start knocking until a minute or two has passed? Can you tell us the year and model of your vehicle? If it's a 1986 Ram pickup as your user name suggests does have computerized ignition and a feedback carburetor? |

Yes, as my name states, I have an '86 Ram. Computerized ignition? Check. Feedback Carb? Huh? Not sure about that one. I know that the engine is largely stock (except for a k & n airfilter). |

Don't rule out the fuel pump making a deep knock-like sound. Mine does sometimes. |

I bought a Napa 1806 filter. Guys at NAPA said it was for farm implements, and I know the / was used in a variety of applications. Is this right? Long, white, but with less flow than the 1068 I normally buy. Will the loss of flow effect the pump? |

If you have an automatic, check the tightness of the bolts on the flex plate. |

Its a 4 speed manual, so the flex plate is out. |

Who says it has less flow? I don't believe that's correct. It'll fit and work well on your slant-6.

So, I have installed the 1806 filter and cleaned the relief valve. Engine knocked at first, then went silent. Let the truck run a while, shut it off. Checked the oil, let it cool. Went out to start it again, knocking is back. What to you guys think? WTF is wrong now? |

The "rep" (parts-ringer-upper) at NAPA is making stuff up. Did you service the oil pressure relief valve per the links further up this thread? |
