Post subject:  new engine
OK its been way to long since I was on here and I have a few questions..Im th inking about buying this slant that runs good out of a 80s dodge truck to put in my 74 duster, NOw will it interchange? will my 904 bolt up? and super six? is a truck engine any tougher or stronger then a car engine?

If your duster had a slant, then yes. I believe everything will bolt up. The super six will also work. I think the truck engines had a slightly better cam in it then the cars, and the crank was a little different too. I have heard some pros and cons about 80s engines, but I think you will be fine.

There is no truck cam vs. car cam; they are the same. The cam differences are by year. Engines after 1980 use hydraulic valvetrains, so their camshaft is different than the '71-'80 solid-lifter cam, which is a little different from the '65-'70 cam, which is a little different from the '60-'64 cam. The eighty-something truck engine will bolt up to the '74 transmission just fine — use the '74 torque converter — but you will need to swap the '74 oil pan and oil pickup pipe onto the truck engine in order for it to fit in your Duster. You'll probably also want to use the '74 distributor.

I Have a mopar performance book on six cyl engines, and it says that one of the simplest/cheapest upgrades to do to a slant it to put a truck slant cam in it. It is supposed to have higher lift. But thats just what I read. It could be wrong. :oops:

I have the older version of that book, and there are so many misprints that it's unreal... everything is just as Dan says... the 1972-1979 'stock mechanical lifter cam' is the better 'stock' cam, the 1980-1987 hydraulic lifter cam is OK (it did what it had to do..)...

The information on this board surpasses the book, as the info has not been kept up to date (I'll bet it still even has the old MP part numbers, that are no longer in the system at the dealership...)

the only other advantage the truck motor has on your original engine is the fact that the crank is cast and is lighter than your 1974 forged crank engine... but you'll only notice the performance increase if you're running a 2 or 4 barrel (then it will wind up a bit quicker...)

That book ain't worth the paper it's printed on. Never has been, except perhaps as not-very-good fiction. All kinds of nonsense in there.

I'll tell you what, I'm glad you quoted the book, even though the book was wrong, dusterguy225. It saved me the cash I would have wasted on it. I was planning on getting that book. So some good came out of it Dusterguy225, I for one, I am glad I read this post.

re build is good if its convenient for you. however if you dont have a semi decent amount of time then buying another engine may be easier, of course thats saying if everything just kind plops in. and sounds like that doesn't always happen. personally id rebuild

Just wondering, were you considering a swap because the Slant thats in there is in need of a rebuild? Or is it just a random thought that occured... dont feel bad if it is, it happens to me alot.

Well, I got that book for free, and its the newer version. It has more about all the other 6 cyl engines than the slant anyway. Thanks for lettin me know its worthless!

The old engine spun a bearing and it needs a rebuild..I was trying to find a engine that needs little to nothing maybe a gasket set nothing serious..Does anyone in the texas area have a good slant that needs a good home?
