Post subject:  Voltage Regulator issue, maybe???

Hi,
Had my car acting wierd tonight on the way home from a car show. The amp guage was running on the charge side at speed and when at a light was on the discharge side. While driving the lights were really bright and stopped pretty dim. The alternator is not that old and the car has never had any issues. I am guessing the regulator crapped out because I saw some of that cider colored crud below the regulator on the firewall. This isnt something else melting the regulator other than the part just wearing out is it???? Thanks.
Chas.

id agree with the assumption of the voltage regulator as far as the gage going from one side to the other (could be wrong), but as far as the melting goo you saw I'm not sure. maybe someone else has any ideas?

Thanks Bob,
Changed the regulator and all seems to fine for now. The regulator is not getting hot so I am guessing its was just the old ones time to take a dump. I had gotten the replacement from Napa and had to modify the mounting flange on one side as it had two mounting screws on one side and one on the other. Got the old cutting wheel out and trimmed it and took the sander and hit the area and cleaned it up. Cant tell the difference now and it needed no new holes drilled. I am going to keep an eye on it for heating up issues.
