for the first time on the track, it did well. It ran 15.50@91,15.30@92 and 14.50@83(missed a shift at the end).

it was a lot of fun. hope to get it down into the 13's next weekend. It was built under the jalopyjournal H.A.M.B. gas rail guidelines. basically, 50's/60's parts only, naturally aspirated, bias ply tires, etc.

Cool car! A pushbutton Torqueflite would make it easier to drive, more consistant and still fit within the rules. Also, collected headers will make it faster. I don't mean to nitpick, I just want to help you go faster and win more races!

first off, thanks. I have been working hard on it, and it has been so much fun to build.

Joshie225: A torqueflite would 'technically' be allowed, but they are going to rule them out next year. I don't take those things as nitpicks. I love feedback. I am a huge newbie to drag racing.

Yeah, I read through the rules and saw that. If they are going to be this hard core they need to limit you to 3-speeds too. Collected headers are the very next thing I would do for the car. It will sound different, but it will be faster. Also, all the Hyper-Pak stuff would be legal including the intake and cam which will really make that rail move.

Hey there, sgtmcd42......I'm one of the FNG's over on the H.A.M.B site. Went over and signed up after someone posted the link to your pics over there.

I suggest you're going to have trouble with the rules next year. If I'm not mistaken, they dictate a steel bell housing or scattershield of minimum .250" thickness, and nobody that I know of makes anything for the slant. I do not know if a guy could fab up his own scattershield as an add-on that could be bolted over the top of the cast bell, say at the four trans mount bolts. Maybe put long studs into the bell, bolt up the trans, then slide the add-on over the trans and onto the studs?
I suppose that would be up to the H.A.M.B techs as to legality.

I don't see a problem, about a scattershield. From what I read in the HAMB rules, you can fab your own. NHRA also allows a homemade 1/4 thick shield, if there is no comercial shield avaiable.

Yeah, I finally FNG'd only recently as well, should've some time ago.

If the H.A.M.B. folk buy it you may be able to simply cover the bell with a frame mounted shield, a lot easier to cobble than the bell itself. That was an early response to NHRA's first shield mandates back when, so perhaps would be considered as "period" allowable. But I don't know how long they'll allow it, for the same reasons they quit it before.

The torqueflite's definately on the chopping block, for the reasons you've mentioned. It wasn't a mod from the era.

I hadn't thought about how early the Hyper-Pak was put out. It certainly would be legit, bump stick and all. I'd bet full tuned exhaust would be OK as well, it was already in use on the road courses and works well with carbs. Multiples of early slide (motorcycle) carbs should be in keeping too, as would early SU set-ups. Any of these could get some serious pull out of the ol' slant.

Sadly, the HA/GR thing will likely see some changes as the insurance nazgul ferret out yet another growing sport to suck the life out of. The whole concept of period mods is a terrific idea but probably not practicable in today's legal morass. Too many people want their thrills with no actual danger and I think the H.A.M.B. is going to have to face this sooner or later.

Apologize for the rant on your dime, but I really DO wish we could find a way to keep things like this alive for the people that love'em. Maybe someone who calls himself a lawyer would like to go down in history by writing a disclaimer that's worth its title............... riiiiiight........

Did some mods and I am going to take it out for a test and tune this friday. New rear end (4.11), locked the distributor and go the timing setup better, new shift linkage, etc etc. I will post how it goes. Hopefully, these mods will be enough to be more competitive for the hamb drags this month. we will see.
