Well here is the details: as best as I can tell the trans oil and filter has never been changed with over 125 k on the clock. This seems to be highly unlikely, but through out all folders of reciepts that came with the car when I purchased it, not one was for trans service. The oil appears clean, does not smell, but the trans seems to be a little rough shifting. I have not done a single thing to the transmission, other than top off. Believe it is the 904. thanks. |

Now's a good time to change the fluid (all of it; the torque converter does have a drain plug), install a new filter, and adjust the bands and linkages to spec. Save yourself a bunch of current and future hassle; stop by the Chrysler dealer and get the really nice double-seal, reusable rigid pan gasket P/N 4295875AC and use it instead of the floppy gaskets that come with the filters. A reputable brand of Dexron fluid will be fine. |

you can also do a flush and a filter. after you pull the pan, change filter, and refill... undo the cooler lines up front. one side will suck, one side will blow put the side thats blasting trans fluid everywhere in an empty 5 gal bucket. put the suction side in a more so full 5 gallon bucket. typical lube shops flush about 15 qts through. cept there machines look cool. |

There really is no need or benefit to doing a messy and costly flush, because you can drain the torque converter as well as the transmission itself. |

The hard lines and fluid cooler does hold some oil but it is a small amount in relationship to what is in the pan and converter. If you want to "flush" the lines and cooler you can: - Disconnect the lines and blow compressed air thru them. Attach enough hose to lead into a container or it make a mess. - Drain the trans & converter, install the new fluid and then disconnect the coolant return line. (the line that goes to the rear of the trans) Again, attach enough hose to lead into a container, then start the engine for a moment. This will pull new fluid in and pump the old ATF out. DD |

My vote would be not to change it with that many miles on the trans. (and not previously changed). The new fluid will have alot of detergent action that might cause things to tire faster. My brother's Dakota has 265k miles on the stock fill. There too, leave it alone. |
