Very nice car. My 74 is my first car. I more of a 73-76 style kind of guy, but your car is pretty nice! A new grille will have that thing lookin good. Good luck with it! What are your plans for it? |

I actually have a new grill, just not installed yet. (as well as glove box, dash pad) my plans for it is to basically have a complete restoration. I want it painted green with black interior, 2 bbl manifold with a 350 cfm holley. just for a start. further down the road i wish to have a 3.55 rear. It came with a 340, I wish it still had it.(the block was cracked and it had major problems) but the /6 is still good. |

Hi 72duster08, My first car was also a '72 Duster. Was a slant six auto...I bought it in 1984 and it had very low mileage at the time about 13K miles...I have fond memories of that car. Your car, however, looks to be a '71 Model. I did notice that it has the '72 bumpers. You can tell they are '72 bumpers as they have the bumper jack slots in them. Check your VIN. What is the 6th digit? if it says "0" it is a 1970, if it's "1" then it is a 1971 if it says "2" then its a '72. The '72 model Duster has the unique "one year" only tail lamps. They differed in appearance to the '70-'71 Dusters and the '73-'76 Dusters. Your car has the '70-'71 rear lamps. Also another clue to the '72 Dusters is the side marker lights. The '72 Duster are not flush with the fenders and quarter panels. The '72 side marker lights actually stick out about 1/4 inch and are the same used on Dusters from '72 thru '76. Again your car has the flush side marker lights which would indicate a '70 or '71 Model Duster. Also check the check the 5th digit of the VIN. If it is "B" it was a 198 slant, if it is a "C" it is a 225 slant, if it is a "G" it is a 318 car, and if it is a "H" then it is the 340. You have a very cool looking car, best of luck with it!. Do a little more research and you will be surprised what you find out about your car. Check your VIN and let me know what you find...nico |

Its indeed a 1972. It originally came with a V8 340. if you look closely at the right fender you can see an emblem showing that it was a V8. |

Um...no. dont worry you didnt burst anything. and thats what the DMV classifies it as. It could be a 71, but i could care less what year it is, I love the car. |

Maybe the dashes got switched, and that changed the vin? Also, why would anyone take an origional 340 car and drop a slant in? With all the mods that would have to be done (kframe, etc.), to me, that would be a huge waste of time and money. |

People do lots of silly things with cars, we parted a 70 duster that originally was a V8 car but had a slant in it. Ask Doc he has a 66 dart with a 63 front clip. Per haps it was wrecked and rebuilt with 70-71 parts. Dacuas and Vacudas are around. most likely the DMV in its infinate stupidity got the year off by one digit when it was first registered. ![]() |

Either that... or Ma Mopar saw fit to release this particular car really late in 71 and had to market it as a 72 model. I don't know what the cutoff month was, but I've seen interesting things on many cars from that era.![]() For example, my 1972 Honda SL350K2 motorcycle is actually a '71 SL350K1. It has all the features of the K1, including the 19" vs. 21" front rim etc, yet its still a '72 K2; since the K1 was not produced in the '72 model year, it was just produced really late in the '71 model year... (November maybe?) and sold as a '72 K2. Awesome Duster BTW!! ~THOR~ |
