i've got a 77 block with the cast crank and a t3 running 7 pounds and my rings are fried. What would be a good choice for a new set of pistons and rings that will hold up better than the stock pieces i have in now. The motor has never been bored out any and neither the head or block have ever been milled. Previous owner has had the motor since practically new and it had never been taken apart till i put a 264 cam in it last summer. I then discovered the steel shim head gasket was still on it.

I have run up to 14 lbs. boost with a T-3 on stock pistons without any problems. Most of the time I run 11 lbs. I believe shaker223 has run up to 21 lbs boost on stock pistons. I sure someone will chime in with some suggestions.

I would imagine that the reason the rings are fried is because they are original... which means they are brittle as heck. If the pistons themselves are ok, just grab some good iron rings, or do yourself a favor and buy moly-coated top rings with standard secondary rings and oil rings. The moly rings seat quickly, and will cause less wear on your engine.

You can order Sealed power or Federal-Mongrel (mogul) moly ring sets for a semi decent price at most auto parts stores. This would also most likely be a good time to do the bearings and what-not... if you haven't already planned it/done it.

The stock cast pistons are pretty beefy and so are the rings. As mentioned, I am running 21 psi of boost on my stocker. I've recently turned up the boost to 24 psi with no ill affects. The extra boost did not do anything when I took it to the chassis dyno so there could be a number of things going on.

What kills the rings primarily in a boosted application is running lean. Have you checked your tune with a wideband?

As far as ring choices, most all are good. I will be using a Wiseco ring in my pistons next year.

Turbo66Valiant is running a lot of boost too. Check out his build in the racing Q&A section.

THOR'S recomendation is good. It all depends on the tune and your intended application. You can also search summit racing for ring sizes to see what is available.
