Hi Guys,

I was just wondering how I tell what kind of distributor my slant has? It's a 1960 iron block 225, I believe Canadian built (the car it has lived in for 48 years certainly is). I'm fairly sure it is the original distributor but I could be wrong.

I'm just interested to know if it is a Chrysler unit or the Prestolite unit (for the sake of buying points).
All help appreciated as always!

Thanks alot,
60Ply

If it's got an aluminium alloy housing, it's Chrysler-built. If cast iron, it's Prestolite, in which case you'd need to have the tag number off the dizzy to get the correct points. Much better to gather the appropriate parts and switch to electronic ignition.

Thanks guys,

I'm guessing this must be a Chrysler dizzy then :)
Yep, an electronic ignition is definately planned for the future, but not just yet. Haven't had any problems with the ignition so far, and the bodywork has a deadline for August 27th (my first wedding booking!!), so currently that is taking the time/money. For the engine, the current priority is to just keep it running rather than upgrade it. I also plan to convert from road draft tube to PCV sometime in the future, I'd prefer to have a system that works wether the car is in motion or not.

Again, thanks for your help,
60Ply

Dan, the distributor in my daughter's '61 has died - specifically the plastic? bakelite? gear has broken. The case is aluminum, bears the Foward Look logo and has the number "2095270 C 44" stamped on it.

Is this a distributor that the major parts houses will have or is it something rare as dinosaur mustaches?

Do not buy a "remanufactured" distributor, which is all you can get from the parts stores. As with most other "reman" parts, they're junk. Now would be an excellent time to upgrade to electronic ignition, which will require a Chrysler electronic distributor. You can get a brand new one from OPCNW and follow the HEI upgrade instructions, or you can buy a complete '73+ Chrysler-style system for $125 from this other known/reliable seller. Either option will give better fuel economy, driveability, performance, and free you forever of the hassle of changing and adjusting breaker points, but both will require you to make some charging system upgrades — send me a PM; I've got a canned file on it — so if time and/or money are tight, then you may want to fix the present distributor for now and upgrade the electrical and ignition systems later. In that case, just replace the distributor drive pinion (gear). It's nylon, and replacements are readily available. All the same for all year slant-6 engines; asking for a replacement distributor drive gear for a '78 Dodge Aspen will meet with a less-blank stare than asking for on for a '61 Plymouth. They aren't hard to install, but they're not as obvious as they seem; see this thread.
