Hi,
I ordered a rebuild kit for my 1965 Valiant 904 Torqueflite transmission last week. Well, today it came in the mail and it said on the box "...for 904 TF-6 transmission 72 and up..."
My question is this: Can I still use this kit or do I need one for the 1965 version. I was hoping to get going on this over the weekend...

I would feel a lot better if the kit said "...for 904 TF-6 trans. 60-65
Clutches, steels and bands will be the same for all 904s.

This later kit could be missing some important seals and small parts, I say *could* because I have seen kits which include a lot of extra lip seals, gaskets and different o-rings to select from. Basically it is cheaper for the kit manufacturer to add-in some extra "cheap" stuff in oder to get the kit to cover more years. (opposed to making and stocking many different kits)

I would start by getting a look at the fluid filter in this 72 & up kit. Does it have one or two big feed holes? (Cable shift 904s have two oil pumps & two passageways from the filter so the correct filter will have two feed holes) Another thing to look for is the rear seal, the later 904 has the "slip-in yoke" draveshaft so the seal has a larger hole and dust cover, the B&T flange uses a smaller rear seal. These are obvious kit items you gan see through the plastic wrap but there are many other differences. Park cable housing gasket, kickdown lever seal, shift cables and speedo cable o-rings, are other parts the later kit may not have.

I would at least call the supplier and see if he carries and can supply you with the early kit.
