Post subject:  Column to console switch

Hi,
I'm thinking of switching the tranny on my son's 73 Valiant from column to console. We are customizing the old 4 door beater into a 2 door and i want to put in buckets and a console. Has anyone else done this swap? What is involved here? How complicated is this? The car is a /6 auto with 904. Any help is appreciated.Thanks,Dan

It's easy if you have a donor car to get all the parts. If you don't have the brackets from the donor, you will have to fabricate your own. I've done it both ways.

The transmission hump will already have indentations where you need to drill to install the linkage. You will also need the dimensions for locating the shifter console and the mounting brackets, so measure before you pull things apart.

If you are working with a donor car, grab the column housing for the floor shift so you can remove all the column linkage and make a neat installation.

I put a B&M 3spd. in last year with no experience doing it prior and everything was spelled out great in the kit, but I had to make one L Bracket myself underneath to hold the mount at the tranny. Theirs just was not going to fit, but mine is great. It took me about 5 hours and somehow I've never gotten it to start in P, but I don't mind starting in N, it seems that the adjustment to get it to park but start in park is so slight I gave up, so I just shift to N and start. I do not think it is a neutral safety switch issue either, just hair fine adjusting on the cable mount underneath I guess.

yow, if you can pull off sectioning a four-door body into a two-door i dont see how converting column to floor shift linkage would be a challenge for you.

You sure youve got the wherewithal to section that body properly? That will entail FAR bigger technical challenges than simple shift linkage modifications. Yikes.

I would first assume that he's just going to weld the rear doors shut and fill the part lines.

Thats what I would do! I think that idea ends up with a great look when all is said and done.
