Post subject:  No Start!

I just replaced the ignition switch in Dominic's 73 Valiant because I thought it was the problem but still no start. The battery is new and I can start it just fine by jumping the starter with a screwdriver. Where to look next? Starter relay? Ballast resistor? How can I chase this down without a voltmeter? Thanks,Dan

How can you chase this down with no voltmeter? Well, you can use a test light instead. Or you can replace parts until the problem goes away...it's worth buying (or making) a test light now, and a voltmeter eventually.

Next test: ignition key in the "run" (normal driving) position, transmission in neutral. Use your screwdriver to jump the two largest terminals on the starter relay (on fenderwell next to battery). If the engine cranks and runs, get out your test light, remove the two small push-on wires from the starter relay, and check for battery voltage across the two wires (or across the one wire and ground) when the key is held in the "Start" position. If voltage is there, replace the starter relay. If no voltage there, check for voltage across the the + small relay wire and battery negative. If voltage there, the neutral safety switch is faulty or out of adjustment. If no voltage there, the ignition keyswitch or its wiring are suspect.

You can also try holding the key in the "Start" position while you move the gearshift through all the gear positions. If you get any noise out of the starter at all, the shift linkage and/or neutral safety switch are out of whack.

I would check the back of the cluster at the amp-meter if the amp-meter breaks than it wont do anything when you try and start it.....dodges are really bad when it comes to that ive had it happen to every dodge ive ever had.....( but they still kick ass ) If you take the clips off the back than connect them to each other and try and start it than you will know...

I appreciate the info guys. This particular car had never given me any starting problems before and I seem to have forgotten all of the electrical problems and solutions that came with the Barracuda. I need some way of saving all the info I get here! I will use your advice this evening after work.

You needn't trouble yourself trying to save the info...it's already saved for you, and you can access it via the board's Search function.

Another vote for the neutral safety switch.
