Post subject:  Strange oil pressure

My friend's slant is having a weird oil pressure issue on start-up. The oil light and guage show no pressure (yet I hear no knock) until the rpms are brought up and held for maybe 3 or 4 seconds. Then the pressure shoots up and stays constant. Is this grounds for a replacement or should I be looking at helping him just do a service on the pump. I know I saw a few threads on that a while back. Any tips would be appreciated.

Once you have pressure, if you kill the engine and start it back up, does pressure come back quicker? Maybe the filter is just draining back into the pan after sitting - may want to try a quality filter with antidrainback valve (wix and few others). Also a standpipe does good as well, or those filters with built in standpipes - wix 51806.

Try servicing the oil pressure relief valve to make sure it's doing its job, as described in these two threads: thread 1, thread 2.

Had the same issue on my '71. Modded the oil pump pressure relief/bypass with the specified 1/4" nut, (also cleaned the crap out of it), and whammo! no more whacky issues.

Yes, once pressure is made then I can re-start with no issues which leads me to think that it's a drain back or cold oil issue coupled with the scored pressure relief piston. I cleaned up the little piston that was significantly scuffed and re-installed it. The test will be in the morning. Wish me luck.
