I'm new to the site & have enjoyed it greatly. I have many questions, but I'll limit it to four (this time!). 1.) The chrome valve cover P3690742 for the SL6 no longer seems to be available. (True?) Has anyone ever seen the finned type from Clifford? Recommended? 2.) Rocker arms: I have managed to locate a full set scattered around, but I cannot even find a part # for the shaft to try to hunt for that. Suggestions? Rocker Arm Specialists offer a ready-to-bolt-on unit for $74.50. Anyone had any experience with their offering? Seems like the simplest way to go. 3.) MANY years ago I had a Holley 390 c.f.m. 4 barrel on an Offenhauser manifold on a very modified SL6 (cam, headers, bigger valves, bored, block milled). I never could get it right (my fault, probably). I have heard good things about the Edlebrock carbs. Is this a good choice? Or, is the A+ set up the offering from prolinefuel.com? Expensive, but is not quality worth it? I still have this engine & hope to revive it. 4.) Last, on a related point, I see that through Doug Dutra's efforts the Hyper Pak manifold is available. What are the parameters of using this manifold? Is it true that it's racing only and that for on the street driving one is only kidding himself? Thank you to any and all who respond! Greg

Greg,

Sounds like you have the building bug - cool. I'll field 1), 2) and 3) and let others take the other questions. I don't think the MP valve cover is available, but I think you can still get a chromie from JC Whitney or Transdapt for $25 or so. I have no experience with the Rocker Arm Specs. pieces, and I've only used cleaned-up junkyard rocker parts. I have so far never broken or damaged an arm or shaft, and they are darn near free.

I am a big fan of the Edelbrock 500. They are very easy to tune, but will work on medium-built Slants right out of the box. Throttle response is great. I recommend getting the strip kit and the electric choke carb for any street driving. I run one on my '68 Dart daily driver (runs about 16.0), and have used it with several different cams/heads with great success. I know some people have had success w/ the 390 too, but I had a bad experience with a old junky one, and never liked the Holley 600 on my cars, especially the crappy gas mileage and poor throttle response.

Welcome to the site! I have seen the Clifford valve cover and it looks pretty cool, but an Offenhauser is cheaper. Lou's right, J.C.Whitney still lists a chrome stock one for around $25. <A HREF="http://www.jcwhitney.com">www.jcwhitney.com</A>
I bought a set of RAS rollers when they still sold them. They were very nice and RAS was really good to deal with.
I run a 390 Holley on my Slant and have found it to be trouble free and easy to tune. However, I have a 500 Edelbrock I'm going to try this year. Many Slanters use them and are happy with them.
I think the Hyper-Pak is very well suited to street use. Doug will probably post an answer shortly. Dennis

Thanks for posting on the site.
Do you still have the Offy & 390 set-up? If so, you may want to start with that and see if we can help you "sort-out" that set-up. If the carb has seen better days, you may want to try a new Eldebrock.

As for the Hyper Pak intake, it works pretty good on the street if it is set-up with the right cam & carb. (like the Eldebrock) The downsides to this manifold is that it has no provisions for manifold / carb heat, it has limited hood clearance when used on a 225 and the linkage has to be custom made. Truth is that the long runners give it great power in the mid range, from 2000 to 5000 RPM.

I've got the 'finned' Clifford valve cover. I like the way it looks ( hopefully pic URL comes thru )but I had oil leaks until I discovered that I had to grind away a couple of locations that interferred with the head bolts.

That cover looks nice Al,
I always thought it was a shame that Clifford put their logo "upsidedown" on that cover.
(Just my silly view of the slant world I guess)
