Post subject: 4 BBL Carb Orientation
PostPosted: Tue Jan 29, 2002 10:12 am
I have a Clifford 45-4500-WH manifold. Considering the air/fuel distribution issues with the SL6, what is "the ticket" on orientation of the primaries/secondaries relative to the centerline of the engine?

Thanks,

Gilly

Gilly...

I would say throttle shafts running parallel to the crank would always give the most even fuel distribution possible for any inline manifold.

Yep, best distribution and throttle response is with primaries away from the engine, secondaries toward w/throttle shafts parallel to crank. I've tried several ways, and that works best.

I also seem to get the best results with the carb. mounted sideways.

Thanks guys! I'd seen several engines with the primaries to the front, and it just didn't seem right. Lou, you nailed it down with the outboard location for the primaries. BTW, I've got a 570 CFM Holley Street Avenger carb. I'll let you guys know how it works.

Thanks again!

 Post subject: throttle cable?
PostPosted: Tue Jan 29, 2002 8:27 pm
WOW, I would of really screwd up big time, I didnt know the carb sits side ways, primaries toward driver side.SO THE BIG QUESTION IS....how does my throttle cable work? I have a cable, and a 4 speed, so no kickdown.

Interesting, the gents over on the inliners board have experimented with the chevy 6 and found it didn't really matter how the carb was positioned.

My 1978 DC racing manuals indicate that on the Offy manifold the primaries should be facing the front of the engine. On the Hyper-pak the primaries should be facing the engine.

Well, hey...they're probably right: no matter WHICH way you put a carb on a chevy 6, a slant will STILL kick its ass!

This is NOT an easy answer, "one way is best" issue. I see super fast and successful SL6 racers running the carbs either way.

I put this issue into the "dial it in" catagory, much like an advance curve, you just have to experiment to see what works best for your combo. and driving. Let's face it, in Drag racing you just slam the carb. full open so all barrels are flowing. In this type of operation, over-all carb calibration is more important the it's position or barrel oriantation. (pretty much what the Inliner's group (Chebby six) sees but they have more manifold and port design issues to correct)

Over the years I have used carb position, staggered jetting and manifold dams etc. to help get the mixture distribution even. Getting real even distribution and mixture quality helped the car go faster.

Hey all,

I just wanted to clarify that my post about carb orientation was pretty much a street driveability issue. I always run my cars mostly on the street, so I set them up for good throttle response and fuel economy, and I found that the primaries out was best for me. I agree that if you are only interested in full-throttle drag racing, then it probably doesn't matter much.

Cheers,

Lou

I'm running a Carter 650 on a Offy Intake and the Offy plate only allows the carb to face either the front or rear of the car. Does anyone make an adapter plate for the Offy that will allow the carb to face away from the engine?? I would like to try it with the primarys facing away from the engine.

I have tried seven different carbs some both directions. I now run a holley Keith Dorton 390 cfm double pumper it works best with the primaries foward on a clifford intake but I can not you tell why because I want to beat the bagels out of Dennis this year and will not give up any secrets. Thanks Ron

I'll admit it now. On my brother's AMC 258 w/ 390 Holley, I positioned the primaries inboard. Looking at my water heated manifold, the outboard position looks to make the best sense. You guys do have me thinking. Why not spin the darn thing around and see which position my engine likes best?

Thanks for your input.

Gilly
