On my 62 the master cylinder seems to be weeping around the gasket. I tried the parts store and I can buy a complete master cylinder but not a gasket. Does anyone have any ideas about a new gasket??

um, no... if there is a leak at the flange where the master bolts to the body, putting a gasket there will only send the fluid into the passenger compartment. putting butyl rubber innertube material there will add rubber-now-turned-to-slime to the mess of brakefluid-wrinkled paint.

the master cylinder is leaking because it needs to be rebuilt or replaced. either the piston seals are worn or the bore/piston is worn oversize, or both. i would recommend taking your master to a rebuilder who can sleeve it with stainless steel. do not exchange it for a hack reman unit from autozone.

okay.

but neither gasket material nor butyl rubber are suitable for contact with brake fluid... the cap gasket and all rubber components are made out of neoprene which will not swell and disintegrate upon contact with brake fluid as ordinary rubber and fibrous gasket will.
if working on another vehicle with a remote reservoir it is important to note that the supply hose to the master is also a special rubber... you cant just replace it with fuel hose.

Joe, I had a like problem with my Dart. The top edge or rim of the reservoir had corroded, and the gasket was caked with rust making for a drippy mess. All I did was carefully dress the top edge with a # 10 mill bastard file, filing outwardly from the center so as not to deposit filings in the brake fluid than decrusted the gasket. So far it has worked well.

Thanks for the good news but... There's always that bottom line. The firewall as well as the master cylinder are damp which leads me to believe that the master cylinder has got to come out and be sent out for a rebuild. It goes along with my theory that the old girl has set for quite a while.
