Post subject:  Fuel filter???

I've got a cannister in my fuel line down by the steering box. It's about 4" long and about 2 1/2" in diameter. It looks original. I've also got a newer in line fuel filter up by the carb. Can anyone tell me what I've got and if I should keep it???
Thanks.
Joe

It could be a canister type fuel filter or a fuel water separator.

I just installed one (Perma Cool fuel water separator) on my rig........love it!
No more bad fuel (full of water) in my carb!
:D

The canister down by the steering box is actually the transmission filter; it's in the transmission cooling line, not the fuel line. Those are getting more difficult to find but I believe Pat Blaise, tflitepatty@verizon.net, might have some available. Beginning in '64 the torqueflite tranny had an internal filter. If you can find a '64+ pan then you can change over to the internal filter. There are probably some other options as well but I'm not as familiar with them.

Right, it's the transmission fluid filter, not the fuel filter. Info on how best to deal with the fuel filter is here. Info on how best to deal with the trans fluid filter is here.
