I am having a problem with the reverse lights on the 70 Duster. 225, 904 automatic out of a 1968 dodge Dart. The neutral safety switch needed to be replace. The 68 switch had just one connection. The 72 switch has 3 prong connector. I replaced all the wiring in the car with 1972 Duster wiring which has 3 prong connector for the reverse/neutral safety switch. The reverse lights come on when I put it in reverse but also come on in drive, 2, and 1! They are off in park and neutral! Any thoughts on how to correct the problem? Should I put a toggle switch in? and if the fix is a toggle how is it to be wired? Thanks, Mark

I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure the thumb/spoon portion of the manual valve's "rooster comb" (inside the transmission, at the bottom of the gear selector shaft) is different for the '69-up combination reverse/neutral-safety switch vs. the '68-down neutral-safety switch. If you have tried a known-good '69+ 3-prong combination switch and it still doesn't work, swap in a '69+ rooster comb.

Dan, I was hoping you would reply! Okay, so the fix in your opinion is the trans it self. I did call the local transmission repair place and he said something close to what you have stated. I was hoping for a quick fix like the one you gave me for the electric choke setup! I also was told that the 68 and down reverse/neutral safety switch was shorter and the 69 and up was a bit longer (deeper into the trans) Not to sure about that since I dont have the original 68 switch to campare with.

I belive the problem is in the trans contact on the valve body. some didn't have an insulator.a car with no reverse lights didn't need it. the insulator depresses the center button without grounding it. when button is depressed it opens the circut for the reverse lights, but when grounded enables the start circut. this can be repaird by pulling the valve body and replacing the rooster comb. not a bad job just takes time.
the wireing on your car should be ok
