Post subject:  Manual Tranny Noise

I have an 83 D-150, A-833 manual transmission, shifts fairly well for a 25 year old transmission, problem is its noisy, with the clutch in, I know the throw out bearing is screaming. With the clutch out, in neutral, a completely different howel, but just a loud. I'll be pulling the engine later this year to do some other work, I can get the throw out bearing then, any thoughts on what it would take to fix the howel in neutral? Would that be a transmission remove / rebuild to fix? Truck has right at 100K miles.

thanks

if its a different noise in nuetral i would say your input shaft bearing on the trans itself is out. with no foot on pedal in neutral stopped, your input shaft only is turning, not your cluster shaft, or output

if the bearings behind the input shaft that surround the nose on the mainshaft have gone bad, are out of tolerance, or if the nose of the mainshaft has been scored badly due to misuse, bad maintenance, or just using the wrong fluid or lack there of... it'll complain like that two... I have a nice A-body mainshaft like that in my shed that I use as a reminder that ATF isn't always the way to go in the A-833OD....

You might as well pull the thing apart and inspect everything, and make sure you don't have anything else wrong in there (if it's been rebuilt in the past, if they reefed on the side plate bolts it can crack the casing loose and leave some aluminum chunks in there...
