owner say it may need some trans work. What trans is in this car ? I have a spare 904 laying about, but not sure if that's what is this car. Did chrysler ever put a overdrive automatic in back of a slant six ?? What vehicles had them in them ? Thanks Dave

It's an A998 in that '82, which is an A904 with wide-ratio gears and a lockup torque converter. Any '68-up slant-6 A904 will drop right in. No, there were no overdrive automatics behind slant-6s.

This question just popped in my mind, what does the lock-up converter do? :?

It's a clutch inside the torque converter that couples the engine directly to the transmission input shaft under cruise conditions above about 45 mph, for roughly 6% better highway fuel economy by eliminating torque converter slip.

Are they any better than the nonlockup transmissions?

In what sense do you mean? As Dan said, fuel economy is slightly better due to the fact that there's no slippage between the engine and the input shaft of the transmission, and it also keeps transmission fluid temperatures slightly lower since the torque converter isn't stirring the fluid around and heating it up. So in those two ways, yes, a transmission with a lockup torque converter is superior to one with a non-lockup converter.

The 998 is probably the best transmission for a street driven slant six. best gas mileage, the wide-ratio makes it easier to get going if you use a high rear axle ratio. These trannies are an even better choice for trucks and vans.

If I could find one where I live, it would already be in my Swinger.

So is this thing the same external dimensions as a 904? Would this fit under my 1974 Satellite w/ no mods ?? - dave

Yes.

The main differences are only that there are extra passages and valves designed specifically for the lockup torque converter function. All the other parts should be the same.
