I got a Ford 8 inch axle that was already setup for a 1970 Dart, the Dart was wrecked a couple months ago. I am getting this axle and driveshaft, with brakes. It looks like a smaller 9 inch Ford.

Are these a good replacement for a Chrysler 7 1/4 on a '64 Dart (assuming that a later tranny replaces the ball and trunion) ? What gear sets are available? Maybe you'll see this on Ebay :)

it is a decent rear. It gets used quite a bit in streetrod stuff as it is easy to swap gears and they are plentiful--at least when I was looking for one. They come with 28 spline axles. I had one in my falcon with a 3.25 gear. From what I recall, you can get quite a few gears for it too.

Just about anything is a "good replacement" for a Mopar 7 1/4 as far as I am concerned!

I have blow-up and swapped-out so many of those "weaklings".

The drop-out is a "plus" but there will be a bolt pattern difference to deal with.
I have no idea what gear ratios are offered for the 8 inch, sounds like a good question to ask on the fordsix.com board.

I was just at a swap meet, and they had TONS of ratios for the 8" - 2.93, 3.25, 3.40, 3.56, 3.73, 3.90...

Tim i just give a friend an 8 inch ford that i was going to put in my car but did not. It was a 3.25 gear from a fairlane. I could not bring myself to put ford parts on a mopar. But there is nothing wrong with this setup. The width of the ford 8 inch and 71/4 were real close Gears are avalbale from several suppliers with good ratios Thanks Ron

I assumed the 8 inch axle has the same bolt pattern as 4 1/2" Dodge wheels. Hmmm, I didn't check the bolt pattern. The axle is under a '70 Dart with a 318 auto that had small bolt pattern front drums.

I saved my '64 Dart from the junkyard. A Ford axle isn't the worst thing that might happen to the car. There are several types of Ford axles with drop out center sections, the 8 looks to be light and strong, plus it looks right on the Dart.

I have a Ford with 225/6 running a 904 Torqueflite
with a 8 inch Ford, the only thing is you can get 4.11 but the next step is 4.56 as I remember. What I would like to have is 4.27 or 4.30, But not available. I do have the Mopar pentagram stamped on the rims (5 lug) so they are Mopar rims.
